Journal ArticleDOI
Transcriptionally active heterochromatin in rye B chromosomes.
Mariana Carchilan,Margarida Delgado,Teresa Ribeiro,Pedro Costa-Nunes,Ana D. Caperta,Leonor Morais-Cecílio,R. Neil Jones,Wanda Viegas,Andreas Houben +8 more
TL;DR: It is shown that the Giemsa banding-positive heterochromatic subterminal domain of rye (Secale cereale) Bs undergoes decondensation during interphase, and this indicates that the noncoding RNA may function as structural or catalytic RNA.
Journal ArticleDOI
Rye B chromosomes are weakly transcribed and might alter the transcriptional activity of A chromosome sequences
TL;DR: For all analyzed B-chromosome-derived transcripts, similar A chromosome-encoded sequences were found which supports an A-derived origin of rye B chromosomes and provides evidence that B chromosome influences in trans the transcription of A chromosome sequences.
Book ChapterDOI
Plant B Chromosomes: What Makes Them Different?
Andreas Houben,Mariana Carchilan +1 more
TL;DR: Current knowledge on the DNA/chromatin composition, origin, and drive mechanisms of B chromosomes are surveyed and the potential research applications of supernumerary chromosomes are discussed.
