TL;DR: In this paper, the author maps out a poetics of interactive narration and supplies the narratological tools to better understand it, showing how the creator's desire to keep the control of the events which constitute the narration in order to preserve the integrity of its structure can be reconciled with the player's expectation of free, unconstrained action.
Abstract: Video games, which started as abstract games, have become fictitious worlds. But they raise the issue of narration: how can the creator’s desire to keep the control of the events which constitute the narration in order to preserve the integrity of its structure be reconciled with the player’s expectation of free, unconstrained action? Marie-Laure Ryan maps out a poetics of interactive narration and supplies the narratological tools to better understand it.
