Building cross-cultural negotiation prototypes in Latin American contexts from foreign executives' perceptions

Purpose – The aim of this study was to identify what people in Mexican organizations perceive as effective and ineffective managerial behavior.Design/methodology/approach – A qualitative study based on the grounded theory approach was conducted. Interviews using the critical incident techniques were conducted with 35 participants from six different companies located in Yucatan, Mexico.Findings – Results suggest that effective managers in Mexico are considered approachable, democratic, fair, considerate, understanding, supportive, caring, and hard working with problem solving skills.Research limitations/implications – This study is based on the responses of participants located in one region of Mexico. What makes managers effective in Mexico

El objetivo de este articulo es determinar los factores que influyen en la participacion de las mujeres colombianas en cargos directivos/organos de gobierno de sus empresas familiares (ef). Se utiliza una metodologia cualitativa y se define un modelo validado a traves del estudio de casos tipo iv. Se analizan 14 casos de ef de segunda y tercera generacion. Se presentan tres proposiciones congruentes con los resultados obtenidos. Se concluye que los factores internos (cuidado del patrimonio, desarrollo profesional y conservacion de la unidad familiar) y los factores trascendentes (aporte al crecimiento de la empresa y generacion de espacios de comunicacion familiar) son los que motivan la participacion de las mujeres. Los factores externos (conflictos familiares, desequilibrio trabajo-familia y definicion del plan de carrera) desmotivan su participacion. Las ef deben mejorar los factores externos para evitar la perdida del talento y el compromiso profesional de las mujeres

An introduction to mindfulness and sensemaking by highly reliable organizations in Latin America

This paper examines the association between institutional ownership and the earnings management behavior of some French absorbing firms. Using a sample of 76 French mergers and absorptions concluded over the period ranging from 2000 to 2010, we undertake to present some empirical evidence highlighting that absorbing-firms manipulate earnings relevant to the year preceding the merger-offer in the presence of institutional cross-holding. However, the presence of active institutions turns out to limit the managerial accruals discretion. The monitoring role exerted by the active-institutional investors does restrict the opportunities of earnings management around mergers and acquisitions. Further analyses suggest that the average value of discretionary accruals with regards to the absorbing firms proves to be influenced by the nature of merger deal (takeover vs. restructuring).
