Barriers to industry 4.0 adoption and its performance implications: An empirical investigation of emerging economy

Limited resource availability and the negative environmental and societal impacts of traditional manufacturing have motivated the need for sustainable manufacturing. Product, process, and system integration, considering the interdependent sustainability impacts, is vital for sustainable manufacturing. Industry 4.0 and its constituent technologies offer significant potential to advance manufacturing competitiveness. Can the implementation of more sustainable manufacturing practices be facilitated or enhanced by using Industry 4.0 technologies? Current literature fall short in comprehensively addressing this question. Most treat either Industry 4.0 as a single technology, or sustainable manufacturing very broadly, without an in-depth consideration of the impacts on products, processes, and systems. To address this gap, this paper presents a comparative analysis examining individual Industry 4.0 technologies and their potential impact on sustainable manufacturing. A framework based on product, process, and systems sustainability metrics clusters is applied to examine these impacts. The findings reveal that literature is still limited in identifying opportunities for sustainability improvement at the different levels using Industry 4.0 technologies; the impact on many criteria related to product, process, or system level sustainability due to Industry 4.0 technologies have not yet been examined. The comparative analysis, and other literature, are used to provide further directions for future research and opportunities on leveraging Industry 4.0 technologies for more sustainable manufacturing. The implications for industry by way of offering a framework to identify potential solutions to enhance sustainable manufacturing performance using Industry 4.0 technologies are also discussed.

Industry 4.0 for sustainable manufacturing: Opportunities at the product, process, and system levels

The enabling role of Digital Technologies towards the Circular Economy transition has been recognized. Nonetheless, to support the transition, the operationalization of the discourse is still needed. The present study performs a systematic literature review, deepening the knowledge on the role of Digital Technologies in operationalizing the Circular Economy transition. The analysis is shaped according to the ReSOLVE framework, as it has been recognized as able to operationally guide industrial firms towards the Circular Economy transition. Despite the broad focus on the topic by the extant literature, the results of the analysis show limited Circular Economy aspects addressed and specific technologies considered, making it difficult to have a complete overview on the implementation of Digital Technologies in the Circular Economy transition, operatively addressing it. Shortcomings are identified regarding the lack of an integrated and holistic analysis of the relationships, the need for investigating the decision-making process and specific Circular Economy practices, all from an empirical perspective. The paper eventually suggests streams for further research while offering theoretical and practical implications.

The Role of Digital Technologies in Operationalizing the Circular Economy Transition: A Systematic Literature Review

The purpose of the article is to perform comparative analysis of formation of Industry 4.0 in developed and developing countries. As peculiarities of formation of Industry 4.0 in developed countries have been studied in this book in the process of studying successful experience of formation of Industry 4.0 in the countries of the world, the authors focus on determining the specifics of formation of Industry 4.0 in developing countries. In order to ensure compatibility of data for developed and developing countries, the similar methods are used—which are based on the authors’ methodological recommendations for monitoring the process of formation of Industry 4.0 in developing countries in 2017 and evaluating effectiveness of Industry 4.0 from the point of view of stimulation of development of knowledge economy in developing countries. During comparison of results of research of the essence and peculiarities of formation of Industry 4.0 in developed and developing countries, the method of comparative analysis is used. For determining the barriers on the path of formation of Industry 4.0 in developing countries, the authors use the method of systemic and problem analysis. For complex study of specifics of formation of Industry 4.0 in developing countries, the objects are the countries that are peculiar for various levels of socio-economic development and belonging to various geographical regions of the world: the South African Republic, China, India, and Brazil. As a result of the research, it is substantiated that the process of formation of Industry 4.0 in developing countries has its peculiarities and is different than in developed countries. As compared to developed countries, in which the process of formation of Industry 4.0 was started earlier and aimed at marketing and social results, developing countries face institutional (absence of state policy of formation of Industry 4.0) and financial barriers and seek economic goals. At the same time, the initiative approach to formation of Industry 4.0 in developing countries, within which the initiators of this process are economic subjects (companies), envisages larger flexibility and effectiveness as compared to the directive approach (state initiative), which is applied in developed countries.
