The Structural Fuse: An Inelastic Approach to Earthquake-Resistant Design of Buildings

Mark Fintel, +1 more
- 01 Jan 1981 -
TL;DR: In this article, an alternative to the empirical approach to earthquake-resistant design of buildings is proposed and illustrated with a design example, which makes some members, mostly beams, weaker, so that they will yield in a controlled fashion during an earthquake.

Modern Concrete Structures Survive Romanian Earthquake

Mark Fintel
- 01 Oct 1978 -
TL;DR: In Bucharest, Romania, on March 4, 1977, 35 buildings collapsed during a severe earthquake (7.2 on the Richter scale) in Bucharest as mentioned in this paper, two of which were older structures, erected before World War II, before seismic design was considered.

Mark Fintel, +1 more
- 01 Apr 1984 -
TL;DR: In this paper, a procedure for determining elastic or inelastic column length changes in tall structures has now been updated, computerized and make applicable to concrete, steel and composite structures.
