TL;DR: The subject of bibliographic instruction for musicians has occasioned much reflection over the years, engendering a literature that I shall not try to summarize in this brief commentary as discussed by the authors, but rather, I hope simply to propose a way of reconceiving some of the issues, a path on which to proceed, and a framework within which to situate my appeal for new approaches.

TL;DR: O'Shea and Vallely as mentioned in this paper apply participatory and performance models of music to the principal style categories of Irish music, making the important point that events, broadcasts and recordings can all be considered as part of music's overall production.
