Abstract: The frequency, line shape, and intensity of the S0(1) quadrupole absorption line of gaseous H2 have been measured in the pressure range 50–1500 Torr(1 Torr = 133.3 Pa), using a diode laser spectrometer. The line profile exhibits Dicke narrowing, the minimum width at a pressure near 100 Torr being about one-half the Doppler width. The variation of line width with pressure is not in complete agreement with theoretical models. The line frequency extrapolated to zero pressure equals 587.03202 ± 0.00021 cm−1, whereas the quadrupole moment deduced from the integrated intensity of the line equals .
