The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child has advanced a model of active citizenry for children, which is difficult to reconcile with the still dominant Western notions of childhood that fetishize innocence and attribute passivity and incompetence to children. This article explores the manner in which state policy, Canadian courts, and children's politics in Canada have responded to the imaginary of the active child citizen. The Canadian government has provided limited political space to young people and has narrowly construed children's participation rights as limited to family law and juvenile justice. The active child citizen: lessons from canadian policy and the children's movement

Children's access to sexual knowledge has always been considered 'risky' and controversial due to the fraught relationship between childhood and sexuality. Based on focus groups with children and their parents, the authors explore the relationship between risk and regulation associated with providing children with accurate knowledge about sexuality. Two main issues are examined: parents' anxieties associated with educating their children about sexuality; and how children actively build narratives around relationships and sexual knowledge based on the fragments of information available to them. The authors argue that dominant constructions of childhood and childhood innocence negate the effective education of children around sexuality, gender and ethical relationships. Additionally, they examine the tensions that exist for many parents around the discourse of child protection and the ways in which this impacts on their education of young children about sexual matters. Children's access to knowledge about sexuality and ethical relationships has crucial implications for their health and well-being, not just in the early years but also throughout their lives. This knowledge can build children's competencies and resilience, contributing to new cultural norms of non-violence in gendered and sexual relationships. It also develops children's capacity to understand their own sexual subjectivity, which is critical for fostering their literacy with regard to sexual knowledge and is essential to their rights as sexual citizens (Robinson, forthcoming). However, debates continue about whose role it is to provide children with sexual knowledge, at what age it is appropriate to impart certain information, and whether this education should take place in the home or in schools. This area of education has been generally considered parents' responsibility, but schools have increasingly become sites for the introduction of sexuality and relationships education. For many parents and educators, teaching children about these issues is fraught with difficulties and anxieties. These tensions can result in the family or schooling avoiding or not effectively addressing sex education with children (Robinson & Davies, 2008a; Goldman, 2010). Based on focus groups with children and their parents, we explore the relationship between risk and regulation associated with providing children with accurate knowledge about sexuality. We address two critical areas: firstly, we examine parents' anxieties associated with educating their children about sexuality. Children's access to sexual knowledge has always been considered 'risky' and controversial due to the fraught relationship between childhood and sexuality. Some adults mistakenly reduce sexuality to sexual contact and sexual orientation, rather than conceptualising sexuality as a central component of our subjectivity. Reducing sexuality to sexual contact and sexual orientation often contributes to the moral panic that is associated with children and sexuality. Hatching Babies and Stork Deliveries: Risk and Regulation in the Construction of Children's Sexual Knowledge

The thesis is focused on residents at senior citizens homes and their subjective view about the importance of various indicators concerning quality of life which are influenced by regular physical activity. The research was performed within the Bruntal region and included eighty-five informants. The first part of SQUALA standardized questionnaire was used for collecting information about the quality of life, in particular to discover the subjective importance of component dimensions, and data about physical activity was collected by means of the IPAQ standardized questionnaire. The thesis is based on methodology of the research plan for MSVVaS SR VEGA project No. 1/0702/10 solved at Faculty of Natural Sciences of Comenius University in Bratislava. The findings have shown that the most important indicator for the participating group of informants is their health. The physical self -sufficiency and capability to take care of oneself has come second and at the same time the informants consider regular physical activity not very important. By making a comparison of both researches considerable differences between their findings have been found out. Both inter-individual and intra-individual differences, such as probands’ age, gender, knowledge, regularity, intensity, and frequency of physical activity, were taken into consideration in the evaluation process of individual indicators as well as dimensions. It was revealed that also those variables af fect the subjective perception of life-quality. Probands aged under sixty-nine are more interested in indicators of physical health and the level of physical self -sufficiency dimension than the other participants. Physically active people attach great significance to surroundings as a dimension alongside all variables which are in connection with physical activity. A statistically significant finding of the evaluation in terms of gender was that female-informants attach greater significance to mental health as well as social relationships dimension than male-informants and that differences occured at two less important indicators as far as the evaluation is concerned.

On April 25, 1884, the popular novelist and antiquarian Walter Besant delivered a lecture called "The Art of Fiction" at the Royal Institution in London. On the following day the Pall Mall Gazette devoted a short paragraph to the lecture in its "Occasional Notes"; and on April 30 it printed a longer response-also called "The Art of Fiction"-from the critic Andrew Lang. In May, Chatto and Windus published the lecture with the author's notes and additions. The Spectator for May 24 carried an unsigned review of this edition, "Mr. Besant on the Art of Fiction," by its editor, R. H. Hutton; and passing references appeared that year and next in other journals.1 Henry James joined the debate in Longman's Magazine in the fall with his own version of "The Art of Fiction"; to which Robert Louis Stevenson rejoined in the winter Longman's with "A Humble Remonstrance." In 1891 the New Review revived the debate through two symposia, "The Science of Fiction," featuring Besant, Paul Bourget, and Thomas Hardy, and "The Science of Criticism," featuring James, Lang, and Edmund Gosse. In 1895 James's erstwhile friend, the young novelist Vernon Lee, added some relevant ideas "On Literary Construction" in the Contemporary Review. These are the chief British contributions to that "era of discussion," as James called it, through which the novel in England and America acquired its first modern credo. The American contribution was more noncommittal: it consisted of brief reviews of Besant's lecture in the Nation (July 3, 1884), the New York Times (August 31, 1884), and the New York Tribune (August 29, 1884); of copious quotations from James's essay by his friend Grace Norton in the Nation (September 25, 1884); and of pirate editions coupling Besant's lecture with James's response as central items in the great debate.2 Technically the "era of discussion" had begun in 1882 with William Dean Howells' controversial essay, "Henry James, Jr.," in Century Magazine, and Stevenson's "A Gossip on Romance" in Longman's.
