Multi-criteria decision analysis in environmental sciences: Ten years of applications and trends

In this paper the authors review the developments of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) since its inception. The focus of this paper is a neutral review on the methodological developments rather than reporting its applications that have appeared since its introduction. In particular, we discuss problem modelling, pair-wise comparisons, judgement scales, derivation methods, consistency indices, incomplete matrix, synthesis of the weights, sensitivity analysis and group decisions. All have been important areas of research in AHP.

Review of the main developments in the analytic hierarchy process

This article describes the original Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) as it is implemented in the software package Expert Choice. We demonstrate its application through a practical example. In particular, we discuss problem modelling, pairwise comparisons, judgement scales, derivation methods, consistency indices, synthesis of the weights and sensitivity analysis. Finally, the limitations of the original AHP along with the new proposed development are explained.

Introduction to the Analytic Hierarchy Process

A heated discussion has arisen over the “best” priorities derivation method. Using a Monte Carlo simulation this article compares and evaluates the solutions of four AHP ratio scaling methods: the right eigenvalue method, the left eigenvalue method, the geometric mean and the mean of normalized values. Matrices with different dimensions and degree of impurities are randomly constructed. We observe a high level of agreement between the different scaling techniques. The number of ranking contradictions increases with the dimension of the matrix and the inconsistencies. However, these contradictions affect only close priorities.

An expert module to improve the consistency of AHP matrices

We present a process model that applies case-based reasoning techniques to information system design. Describing the process model we focus on similarity and case adaption aspects. We are currently implementing the process model in a research prototype called CBModeler.

Case-Based Reasoning for Information System Design

AHP is a multi-criteria decision method widely used by non-experts. We have been implementing an Intelligent Tutoring System teaching the underlying the-ory, in particular the construction of consistent or near consistent AHP matrices, and the calculation of priorities and consistency indexes. AHP Tutor’s architecture sup-ports adaptable exercises and dynamic explanations of solution paths.

An intelligent tutoring system for AHP

An empirical survey examines information technology (IT) in five big Swiss and German companies during the process of merger or acquisition. Four alternatives of system choice will be discussed: Take-over, best of a breed, disconnection, and a newly developed system. The paper shows what strategies the firms have chosen and reasons for the decisions will be given. The empirical evidence revealed the IT personnel as the main problem area. Problems exposed to external staff will be shown and the planning of integration processes and outsourcing related to mergers and acquisitions will be discussed. The paper ends with a list of suggestions about communication, networking, decision making, personnel administration and company culture.
