Tourism gender research: A critical accounting

This paper presents a condensed history of Library and Information Science (LIS) over the course of more than a century using a variety of bibliometric measures. It examines in detail the variable rate of knowledge production in the field, shifts in subject coverage, the dominance of particular publication genres at different times, prevailing modes of production, interactions with other disciplines, and, more generally, observes how the field has evolved. It shows that, despite a striking growth in the number of journals, papers, and contributing authors, a decrease was observed in the field's market-share of all social science and humanities research. Collaborative authorship is now the norm, a pattern seen across the social sciences. The idea of boundary crossing was also examined: in 2010, nearly 60% of authors who published in LIS also published in another discipline. This high degree of permeability in LIS was also demonstrated through reference and citation practices: LIS scholars now cite and receive citations from other fields more than from LIS itself. Two major structural shifts are revealed in the data: in 1960, LIS changed from a professional field focused on librarianship to an academic field focused on information and use; and in 1990, LIS began to receive a growing number of citations from outside the field, notably from Computer Science and Management, and saw a dramatic increase in the number of authors contributing to the literature of the field. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Les modifications des modes d'approvisionnement en informations suscitees par l'emergence de ressources electroniques d'information ont entraine des modifications des competences requises des professionnels de l'information. Ils doivent non seulement etre au courant des technologies emergentes d'information et de communication (TIC), mais aussi etre en mesure de les utiliser et disposer d'aptitudes fondamentales en matiere de communication. Les organismes professionnels tels que CILIP au Royaume-Uni et ALA (American Library Association) aux Etats-Unis reconnaissent l'importance d'une formation professionnelle permanente afin de maintenir a jour les competences et l'expertise dans tous les domaines d'activite. La necessite de disposer de competences TIC a un impact evident sur les professionnels des services de reference, avec l'emergence des services numeriques de reference. Un projet de recherche mene a l'Universite John Moores de Liverpool, portant sur l'approvisionnement en information par voie electronique au Nigeria, a mis en lumiere un manque significatif de competences chez les professionnels de l'information. La collaboration et la gestion strategique des ressources peuvent etre essentielles pour reduire ce probleme.

ICT Skills for Information Professionals in Developing Countries: perspectives from a study of the electronic information environment in Nigeria

This paper examines three e-journals and one paper journal begun in the 1990s within the information science genre. In addition, these journals are compared to what is perhaps the leading information science journal, one that has been published continuously for fifty years. The journals we examine are CyberMetrics, Information Research, the Journal of Internet Cataloging, Libres, and the Journal of the American Society for Information Science. We find that there are a number of important differences among the journals. These include frequency of publication, publication size, number of authors, and the funding status of articles. We also find differences among journals for distributions of authors by gender and corporate authors by region. Some of the regional differences can be explained by journal maturation -the more mature the journal the greater the dispersion. We also find that women are more likely to publish in the newer journals than in JASIS. The fact that a journal is or is not an e-journal does not appear to affect its presence or "behaviour" as an information science journal.
