TL;DR: It is demonstrated that uteroplacental insufficiency alters intrauterine PTHrP, placental AT(1a) expression, and perinatal calcium in association with a reduction in fetal growth, which may provide an important model for exploring the early origins of adult diseases.
Abstract: During pregnancy, parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) is one of many growth factors that play important roles to promote fetal growth and development, including stimulation of placental cal...

TL;DR: It is found that maternal and perinatal environmental factors do not play a major role in the development of the much larger total fluid intake (water plus saline) or saline preference (proportion of thetotal fluid intake taken as saline) of the SHR.

TL;DR: Each of the reviews by the expert authors demonstrates how perturbations to biological systems in early development, results in adult disease.
Abstract: It is well established that various adult diseases have their origins in fetal life, this concept is commonly referred to as the ‘Barker Hypothesis’. Thus, low birth weight, thinness and short body length at birth is associated with increased rates of cardiovascular disease, non-insulin dependent diabetes and obesity in adult life. This phenomenon, now referred to as the “Developmental origins of health and disease”, reflects the influences of the maternal environment around conception and fetal life, as well as the postnatal environment. When first postulated, it was suggested that such diseases originate as a result of adaptations made by the fetus when it becomes undernourished. Insults, at critical developmental stages, program cardiovascular, metabolic or endocrine adaptations and permanently change the structure and/or function of the body. As we attempt to correlate structural and functional changes with molecular parameters of disease, the study of biological systems is becoming more imperative. The impact of programming on reproduction at all developmental stages has been relatively unexplored. Each of the reviews by our expert authors demonstrates how perturbations to biological systems in early development, results in adult disease. The topics encompass:
