Bu çalışma, İstanbul’daki seçilmiş gecekondu mahallelerinin göze çarpan niteliklerini, sosyo-politik (özellikle sol kanat) kimliğini yansıtan politik duvar temaları aracılığıyla incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. İnceleme yöntem olarak fotoğrafla belgeleme ve yüz yüze görüşme; İstanbul’daki merkezi konumları nedeniyle, muhalif bir söylemi olan ve bu sözü yazı ve eylemlilikler aracılığıyla kamusal alanlarda görünür olarak sergileyen, 1980’li yıllardan sonra ikinci gecekondu dalgasında gelişmiş direngen 6 mahallede gerçekleştirildi. Araştırma, 2015-2016 yılı süresince gerçekleştirilen mimari fikir projesi sürecinde, çok sayıda ev ziyareti kapsamında ancak röportajları kayıt altına alınma imkanı bulunan 27 kişiyle yapılan ucu açık sözlü görüşmelerle yürütüldü. Çalışma, duvar resimlerini politik ifade amacıyla “mimari yüzeylerin yerel mülkiyeti” perspektifinden açıklığa kavuşturmaktadır. Bu süreçte, konu iki paralel açıdan ele alınmaktadır. İlk olarak, duvar resimlerinin kentsel rolü, duvarların içeriği ile kentsel alandaki konumları arasındaki ilişkiye bakılarak incelenir. İkinci olarak, duvar resimleri farklı medyalar aracılığıyla siyasal ifadenin tutarlılığı kavramı göz önünde bulundurularak analiz edilir. Mimarinin süreci ve ürünü olarak kentsel açık alanların pratik kullanımı metinsel ve görsel dil ile duvarlara çizilen kültürel sembollerle birlikte ele alınıp incelenecektir. Sol kanattaki siyasi direnişin çabaları ve yerel toplumun hükümetin tutumuna karşı sahip olduğu fikirler duvar resimlerinde görülebilmektedir. Bu araştırma, açık kentsel mekanların kullanımıyla yaratılan dil ve duvarlardaki dilin örtüşmesinden yola çıkarak, duvarlardaki dil ile gecekondu sakinlerinin kimliği arasındaki bağlantıyı vurgulamayı amaçlamaktadır.

POLITICAL MURALS as REFLECTION of CULTURAL and IDEOLOGICAL IDENTITY: The CASE of ISTANUL’S SLUM NEIGHBOURHOODS

The role of higher education in society activation through digital mural in ASEAN cities

In the late 1960s, mural painting was adopted as a channel of social expression for those who felt that they did not possess the agency to establish their own cultural representation and identity. These people, usually from ethnic enclaves and disenfranchised urban areas, painted on walls combining imageries adopted from their cultural roots with contemporary styles and inspiration to visually communicate their concerns, hopes, and culture as a collective community. This practice of community muralism has continued in various areas to present. However, these community murals are quickly and consistently disappearing from the built environment today, despite the conservation efforts by various organizations and professionals. Within this context, this study reevaluates the murals as a cultural resource and the existing practices in which they are addressed to reveal the challenges at the root of the problem. Introducing the often neglected concept of ephemerality to the discussion of these murals, this study determines that the resource is more complicated than is regarded by the preservation field. It then offers a comprehensive approach to treating these murals, not only as images from the past but as a continuing social practice.

Balancing Past and Present: Reevaluating Community Murals and Existing Practices

Long‐term collaborative participant observation of street murals in New York City shows many ways in which aspects of culture are flexible and mutable. Even the concept of self‐defined ethnic identity, supposedly a bedrock notion within culture, changes greatly. Ethnic identity moves back and forth across a continuum, extremely exclusive at one end and comprehensive at the other. The degree of exclusivity or comprehensiveness depends on the mural's theme. Important factors determining this process are the global/local infrastructure, the process of perception itself, and time‐honored muralists' conventions such as representational ambiguity.
