Preserving Special Collections through Internal Security.

This paper examines the problem of security of library materials in Nigerian university libraries in general, and the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Nigeria (UNAAB) in particular. Information for the study was drawn from the literature, records available at the Readers Services Department of UNAAB library, and the experiences of the author as a Reader's Services Librarian. Among important findings, it was found that, among the various user groups, students (96.6%) topped the list of culprits as far as book theft and mutilation are concerned. Methods of stealing books vary, but include hiding them on one's person, diverting the attention of security and library staff, and thieves' paid collaboration with student assistants. Three interesting case studies are also presented. Library Stock Security: The Experience of the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Nigeria

The survey discussed in this article investigated the prevalent rate at which book theft occurs, especially in academic society and with special interest in Nigerian academic institutions. The main objective was to evaluate the level at which book theft and mutilation are plaguing academic libraries in Nigeria and to proffer some measures for curbing the menace. A total of 120 questionnaires were distributed to professional librarians, library officers and library porters (security staff) in four academic institutions in Ibadan, Ogbomoso and Oyo, Oyo state, Nigeria. Seventy-eight copies were returned and found useful (a response rate of 65 percent). Reference materials and periodicals such as journals, newspapers, and magazines are mostly affected.
