A magnetic positioning system for use in inductive couplings. The magnetic positioning system having a magnet that provides sufficient magnetic force, but does not have enough electrical conductivity to overheat in the presence of the anticipated electromagnetic field. The magnet may be a bonded magnet or a shielded magnet. In another aspect a plurality of magnets are used to provide magnetic attraction forces and said magnetic repulsion forces that cooperate to align the inductive power supply and the remote device. In another aspect, a sensor allows differentiation between different positions of the remote device or inductive power supply. In another aspect, multiple magnets in the inductive power supply interact with multiple magnets in the remote device to position the remote device in different positions.

Magnetic positioning for inductive coupling

Devices and methods are described to facilitate the coupling of two wires introduced into the vascular system at two different points in the body. The coupling enables the formation of a continuous wire entering the body at one point and exiting at another remote point. The device consists of two wires "A" and "B" with a magnetic element attached to one end of each wire. The coupling is formed by the forces of attraction between the magnetic elements. Wire "A" is introduced at one point in the vascular system, for example, in the femoral artery. Wire "B" is then introduced at another point in the vascular system, for example, the axiliary artery. The wires are advanced towards each other under fluoroscopic guidance. The magnetic tips couple once the two wires near each other. The coupled wires are then withdrawn together from either of the two access sites. Once the magnetic coupling exits the body, a single wire is left traversing the vascular system. This wire can then serve as a monorail over which to exchange catheters, transport tools and implants and to perform procedures. This device will facilitate the development of bi-directional endovascular, biliary, genito-urinary and gastro-intestinal procedures. The applications of this device are not limited to human subjects.

Magnetic device to assist transcorporeal guidewire placement

A method of performing a gastrostomy by ischemia-induced tissue remodeling. To accomplish this, a small intragastric disk is magnetically coupled to a larger disk on the outside of the abdominal wall. The attractive magnetic force acting on the two disks occludes blood flow to the intervening tissue. The ensuing local ischemia results in infarction and resorption of that tissue. As the tissue is resorbed, the smaller intragastric disk is drawn toward the larger disk on the outside of the abdominal wall creating a stoma in its path and leaving the stomach adherent to the abdominal wall around the perimeter of the smaller disk.

Magnetic enteral gastrostomy

A magnet used for concentrating a medical substance carried by a magnetic fluid at an internal treatment site. The magnet is inserted through an opening in a patient's body and advanced to the internal treatment site. Although an electromagnet is used in one alternative embodiment, the magnet is preferably a super neodymium or other rare earth permanent magnet having a high field strength. A probe that includes the magnet is coated with a biologically inert material, such as a TEFLON™ polymer. Alternatively, a plurality of such magnets can be employed. In the preferred embodiment, a magnetic fluid that includes particles coated with a photoreactive agent is injected into the patient's body, preferably, immediately adjacent to or inside the treatment site. The particles in the magnetic fluid are attracted to the magnet at the treatment site, and the concentration of the photoreactive agent absorbed into the tissue around the magnet at the internal treatment site is enhanced. The photoreactive agent is used to provide a photodynamic therapy (PDT) to the treatment site that destroys cells that have absorbed the photoreactive agent when the internal treatment site is illuminated by light of an appropriate waveband. A PDT probe having a light source that emits light of the required waveband is inserted into the patient's body and advanced to the treatment site to effect the PDT. The magnet (or magnets) can also be disposed inside the PDT probe, which then carries the magnet(s) to the internal treatment site.

Internal magnetic device to enhance drug therapy

A flux concentrator and method for manufacturing a flux concentrator is provided. The method can include combining powdered soft magnetic material, a binder, a solvent, a internal lubricant; mixing the materials to create a mixture, evaporating the solvent from the mixture, molding the mixture to form a flux concentrator, and curing the flux concentrator. The flux concentrator may be laminated and broken into multiple pieces, which makes the flux concentrator more flexible. Breaking the flux concentrator does not significantly affect the magnetic properties. Since the permeability of the binder is very similar to that of air, adding tiny air gaps between the fractions is not significantly different than adding more binder.

There is provided a gap in a magnetic circuit of an iron core inductor, and a plurality of small size permanent magnet pieces are placed in the aforesaid gap, with the magnetizing directions thereof being provided in side-by-side relation. If the magnetizing direction of the permanent magnet pieces is opposed to that of a D.C. magnetic field which is produced in a magnetic circuit, yet in case D.C. and A.C. overlapping currents flow through the inductor, then the D.C. magnetic field produced in the magnetic circuit will be off-set thereby, providing a high inductance value, while eddy currents produced within the permanent magnet pieces due to the A.C. magnetic field will be reduced to a considerable amount, because the permanent magnet pieces are small in size, thus minimizing the heat to be produced in the permanent magnet pieces.

The magnet article for attracting foreign matters in the stomach is constituted by (a) a hollow cylindrical case made of a corrosion-resistant, non-magnetic material: (b) a plurality of disc-shaped yokes made of a soft magnetic material; (c) a plurality of disc-shaped magnet members made of an R-Fe-B permanent magnet material and having magnetic poles on both end surfaces, the disc-shaped magnet members being arranged alternately with the disc-shaped yokes in the hollow cylindrical case such that the magnetic poles having the same polarity of the adjacent disc-shaped magnet members face each other via each disc-shaped yoke; and (d) a pair of end covers made of a corrosion-resistant, non-magnetic material, each end cover being fixed to each end of the hollow cylindrical case so that the inside of the hollow cylindrical case is sealed.
