A liquid crystal apparatus comprises a) a liquid crystal device comprising an electrode matrix composed of scanning electrodes and data electrodes, and a ferroelectric liquid crystal; and b) a driving means. The driving means includes a first drive means for applying a scanning selection signal two or more scanning electrodes apart in one vertical scanning so at to effect in one picture scanning in plural times of vertical scanning, and a second drive means for applying data signals in synchronism with the scanning selection signal.

These curved sectional profiles can be formed by suitably selecting and combining various patterning and etching methods.

Liquid-crystal display apparatus

Two electric fields that are directed to respective directions rectangular relative to each other are selectively applied to polymer dispersed liquid crystal by means of electrodes arranged to sandwich the polymer dispersed liquid crystal and electrodes arranged along a substrate to uniformly orient the liquid crystal in either of the directions. While conventional polymer dispersed liquid crystal is adapted to utilize scatter of light in a randomly oriented state, the polymer dispersed liquid crystal of this invention is adapted to utilize a uniformly oriented state to improve the efficiency of scattering light. The present invention is also applicable to devices where polymer dispersed liquid crystal has a memory property.

There is provided a ferroelectric liquid crystal device wherein the yellowing due to a cell thickness increase or occurrence of voids is suppressed. The ferroelectric liquid crystal device includes a pair of substrates each having thereon a group of electrodes for liquid crystal drive, and a layer of ferroelectric liquid crystal disposed between the substrates, wherein thermosetting adhesive particles and thermoplastic polymer particles having a diameter which is 1.5-5 times the liquid crystal layer thickness are dispersed and pressed between the substrates. The polymer particles preferably have a glass transition temperature of at most -20° C.
