Validity and reliability of health promoting lifestyle profile II in the Iranian elderly

Social well-being and place attachment are two important concepts in health and quality of life of older adults. There are few studies on the relationship between these concepts at the individual level. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effect of place attachment dimensions on social well-being dimensions in older adults. This study was a descriptive and cross-sectional study conducted on 550 community-dwelling older adults in a metropolitan area of Tehran. Participants were selected using a multistage cluster sampling approach. A Persian version of the Social Well-being Scale and the Place Attachment Scale were used to collect data. Data analysis was performed using an independent t test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation and multiple regression analysis by IBM SPSS statistics V.22 software. The effects of place attachment on social well-being in older adults

Background and purpose: The Activities of Daily Living scale (ADL) and instrumental activities of daily living scale (IADL) are two instruments that screen elderly respondents for physical functioning. They also assess whether they are dependent or independent in performing their activities. This study was conducted to investigate the reliability and validity of Iranian version of ADL and IADL. Materials and methods: ADL and IADL Persian versions were prepared by the forwardbackward method. Content Validity Index (CVI) was also used. The questionnaire was given to 300 individuals. To determine the criterion validity, sensitivity and specificity of the ADL and IADL were calculated. To assess the construct validity convergent validity and known groups were used and ADL and IADL mean scores were compared using the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE). Internal consistency and reliability was assessed by Cronbach's alpha and test-retest. Results: The content validity index was more than 0.82 for both ADL and IADL. Convergent validity showed that the mean scores of ADL and IADL in elderly individuals with normal and adverse normal cognitive ability were significantly different. Also, the studied instruments were able to differentiate between different age groups. The sensitivity and specificity of ADL and IADL were 0.75 and 0.96, respectively. Cronbach'salpha and ICC were more than 0.75. Conclusion: The Persian version of ADL and IADL were found to be consistent and valid measures for assessing daily activities and instrumental activities of Iranian elderly. They are also easy to use and are recommended for research projects.

Validity and Reliability of the Clock Drawing Test in Older People

Background: Apolipoprotein E (APOE), which its e4 allele has been reported as a risk factor in late onset Alzheimer’s disease (AD), is the main cholesterol carrier in the brain. ATP-binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1) gene on chromosome 9, which has been known by genome-wide AD linkage study, has an important role in cellular cholesterol efflux. This study determines the association between sporadic AD and the human ABCA1 and APOE gene polymorphisms in Iranian population. Methods: 154 AD cases and 162 control subjects from Iranian population were genotyped for APOE genotypes and ABCA1 polymorphism (R219K). Results: The frequency of e2e3 genotype was higher in control subjects comparing AD patients but was not significant (13% versus 5.8%) and e3e4 genotype frequency was significantly higher in AD cases comparing with control subjects. APOE-e2 allele frequency in cases was lower than control subjects but this difference was not significant (4.5% versus 8%). Individuals carrying e4 allele, developed AD 6.5 times more than non-carriers (OR=6.52, 95%CI=2.63-16.17). There was no significant association between ABCA1 polymorphism and AD. Conclusion: Unlike other studies, R219K polymorphism was not dependent on gender and APOE-e4 allele and there was no association between APOE and ABCA1 in AD patients compared to controls.
