Ambient Particulate Air Pollution and Daily Mortality in 652 Cities

Short-term and long-term effects of outdoor air pollution, especially particulate matter (PM), are now established. Ongoing research has focused on which specific components and sources of PM are most toxic to human health. Disentangling the traffic-related health effects of exhaust and non-exhaust emissions is critical from a public health perspective, because non-exhaust PM are projected to increase in the future. This chapter presents the latest epidemiological evidence linking exposure to non-exhaust sources of PM on human health. A specific focus is dedicated to the major limitations and challenges for the assessment of population exposure to non-exhaust traffic PM. The main epidemiological study designs and their implications for future measurement campaigns are discussed. Health effects are presented distinguishing between short-term and long-term epidemiological studies. In addition, early manifestations possibly attributable to non-exhaust PM exposure are discussed. Finally, novel epidemiological approaches dealing with multipollutant and multisource mixtures and health effects are outlined.
