Welcome to the proceedings of the 22nd edition of REFSQ: the International Working Conference on Requirements Engineering – Foundation for Software Quality!

Requirements engineering (RE) has been recognized as a critical factor that impacts the quality of software, systems, and services. Since the term “requirements engineering” was coined, the community of practitioners and researchers has been working tirelessly on the identification, characterization, and evaluation of the multifaceted relationships between aspects of requirements processes, artifacts, and methods and aspects of software quality. The REFSQ working conference series has been well established as Europe’s premier meeting place in RE and as one of the leading international forums dedicated to the conversation on RE and its many relationships to quality.

Requirements engineering: foundation for software quality

[Context/motivation] Game development is characterized by a high level of creativity when compared to other fields of software development. Games cover a multitude of themes and genres, and represent a heterogeneous group of different products with varying requirements and business goals. [Question/problem] Requirements engineering (RE) should be relevant to game development, but is this true and if it is, how does game industry apply RE in practice? [Principal ideas/Results] We interviewed 27 software professionals in seven organizations to understand how requirements engineering is applied in game developing organizations. The results suggest that in game development business practicalities and drive for “fun” dominate the areas associated with requirements engineering. Additionally, game development organizations apply approaches and methods that are comparable to requirements engineering and requirement management, but do not consciously apply common RE practices. [Contribution] This paper extends our understanding of requirements engineering in video game development and contributes to the requirements engineering body of knowledge.

The proper technical condition of a vehicle and rail track in operation is a key aspect in terms of safety and travel comfort. This issue is of particular importance for operators and managers of rolling stock and rail infrastructure. Currently, many diagnostic systems have been developed to monitor the technical condition of selected vehicle systems or rail track from the viewpoints of both the vehicle and track. This article proposes the use of vibration signals in selected quantitative and qualitative analyses as the main diagnostic parameter. For this purpose, over a dozen vibration measurements were carried out during the normal operation of a freight wagon as part of a so-called passive experiment. Measurement points were located on the axle boxes of the wheelsets. The proposed research methodology served as a basis for comparative analyses of the selected operational cases that were investigated. The most important conclusion from the study is that it is possible to monitor the technical condition of vehicles and tracks in real time on the basis of measurements of vibration accelerations at the vehicle level. This directly increases the service life of rolling stock and optimises operating costs by changing the maintenance strategy to one that takes into account the idea of modern on-board technical diagnostics. Another important aspect is the possibility of the varied use of the proposed measurement system, depending on the purpose of the research, which is also associated with the diagnostician’s experience in processing vibroacoustic signals and the utilisation of simple or complex quantitative and qualitative analyses.

Streszczenie Szczególnym przypadkiem niesprawności pojazdów szynowych, często dotyczącym poziomów utrzymania z częściowym demontażem podzespołów, są uszkodzenia elementów układu napędowego, które objawiają się jedynie podczas jazdy. Są one trudne do wykrycia według standardowych metod stacjonarnych. Wykorzystanie metod selekcji negatywnej lub zaawansowanych metod diagnozowania lokalizacji i identyfi kacji tych niesprawności, może przyczynić się do znacznego wzrostu kosztów obsługi, które wymiernie wpływają na całkowity koszt eksploatacji pojazdu. W takim przypadku konieczne staje się ich zminimalizowanie, przez określenie jedynie stopnia zakłócenia funkcjonowania poszczególnych elementów układu napędowego pojazdu. Umożliwi to lokalizację obszaru wystąpienia niesprawności i podjęcie dalszych decyzji obsługowych. W artykule przedstawiono wyniki testowego wdrożenia funkcjonalnej diagnostyki kontrolnej układów napędowych w eksploatacji wybranego typu pojazdu szynowego. Przedstawiono wyniki badań eksperymentalnych, wykorzystujących pomiary drgań elementów układu napędowego. Na ich podstawie możliwe jest opracowanie wzorcowych wskaźników zakłócenia funkcjonowania elementów układu napędowego pojazdu do zastosowania w diagnostyce kontrolnej taboru.
