Starting from Tesla's principles of wireless power transfer a century ago, this critical review outlines recent magneto-inductive research activities on wireless power transfer with the transmission distance greater than the transmitter coil dimension. It summarizes the operating principles of a range of wireless power research into 1) the maximum power transfer and 2) the maximum energy efficiency principles. The differences and the implications of these two approaches are explained in terms of their energy efficiency and transmission distance capabilities. The differences between the system energy efficiency and the transmission efficiency are also highlighted. The review covers the two-coil systems, the four-coil systems, the systems with relay resonators and the wireless domino-resonator systems. Related issues including human exposure issues and reduction of winding resistance are also addressed. The review suggests that the use of the maximum energy efficiency principle in the two-coil systems is suitable for short-range rather than mid-range applications, the use of the maximum power transfer principle in the four-coil systems is good for maximizing the transmission distance, but is under a restricted system energy efficiency (<;50%); the use of the maximum energy efficiency principle in relay or domino systems may offer a good compromise for good system energy efficiency and transmission distance on the condition that relay resonators can be placed between the power source and the load.

A Critical Review of Recent Progress in Mid-Range Wireless Power Transfer

Inductive power transfer (IPT) has progressed to be a power distribution system offering significant benefits in modern automation systems and particularly so in stringent environments. Here, the same technology may be used in very dirty environments and in a clean room manufacture. This paper reviews the development of simple factory automation (FA) IPT systems for both today's complex applications and onward to a much more challenging application-IPT roadway. The underpinning of all IPT technology is two strongly coupled coils operating at resonance to transfer power efficiently. Over time the air-gap, efficiency, coupling factor, and power transfer capability have significantly improved. New magnetic concepts are introduced to allow misalignment, enabling IPT systems to migrate from overhead monorails to the floor. However, the demands of IPT roadway bring about significant challenges. Here, compared with the best FA practice, air-gaps need to be 100 times larger, power levels greater than ten times, system losses ten times lower to meet efficiency requirements, and systems from different manufacturers must be interoperable over the full range of operation. This paper describes how roadway challenges are being met and outlines the problems that still exist and the solutions designers are finding to them.

Modern Trends in Inductive Power Transfer for Transportation Applications

Wireless power has been a topic of interest from the early 20th century until today. This paper traces the history of wireless power transmission starting with Nikola Tesla, continuing on to experiments with beaming power using microwaves. Examining the difference between near-field and far-field techniques, this paper continues into modern times explaining why near-field technique is more suitable for consumer electronic devices and exploring the near-field transmission of power via the magnetic field. Examples of short-range and midrange wireless power systems are explored.

Wireless Power Transmission: From Far Field to Near Field

Design and fabrication of a 1-MW inductive power transfer (IPT) system that supplies power to the vehicle in real time without any battery charge is proposed for a high-speed train. The IPT system consists of a 1-MW resonant inverter, a 128-m transmitter, four pickups, including rectifiers, and a wireless feedback network to maintain a constant output voltage of the pickups. The operating frequency of the system is 60 kHz to achieve efficient power transfer with a large air gap. The measured efficiency of the IPT system at the 818-kW output power of the pickups for the 5-cm air gap is 82.7%. The electromagnetic field and the induced voltage at the rail are also measured for safety evaluation. The fabricated IPT system was adapted to the high-speed train, and the train successfully accelerates to a speed of 10 km/h according to startup procedures.

Development of 1-MW Inductive Power Transfer System for a High-Speed Train

Neural implants have emerged over the last decade as highly effective solutions for the treatment of dysfunctions and disorders of the nervous system. These implants establish a direct, often bidirectional, interface to the nervous system, both sensing neural signals and providing therapeutic treatments. As a result of the technological progress and successful clinical demonstrations, completely implantable solutions have become a reality and are now commercially available for the treatment of various functional disorders. Central to this development is the wireless power transfer (WPT) that has enabled implantable medical devices (IMDs) to function for extended durations in mobile subjects. In this review, we present the theory, link design, and challenges, along with their probable solutions for the traditional near-field resonant inductively coupled WPT, capacitively coupled short-ranged WPT, and more recently developed ultrasonic, mid-field, and far-field coupled WPT technologies for implantable applications. A comparison of various power transfer methods based on their power budgets and WPT range follows. Power requirements of specific implants like cochlear, retinal, cortical, and peripheral are also considered and currently available IMD solutions are discussed. Patient's safety concerns with respect to electrical, biological, physical, electromagnetic interference, and cyber security from an implanted neurotech device are also explored in this review. Finally, we discuss and anticipate future developments that will enhance the capabilities of current-day wirelessly powered implants and make them more efficient and integrable with other electronic components in IMDs.

Wireless Power Transfer Strategies for Implantable Bioelectronics
