A monochromatic image of which the number of gradation levels (for example, 1024 levels) is greater than that (for example, 256) of a monochromatic image viably handled by an operating system (OS) (13) is converted into a color image which is then received by the OS (13). The color image to be handled by the OS (13) is embraced by the number of available colors (for example, 16,777,216) and can thus be released out directly. The color image released from the OS (13) is then converted into a monochromatic image of which the number of gradation levels (for example, 1021 or 1024) is greater than that (for example, 256) of a monochromatic image viably handled by the OS (13) before displayed. Accordingly, the monochromatic image can be displayed at multiple gradation levels which exceed the gradation limit of any conventional operating system without drastically modifying the hardware or software.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reversibly convert monochromatic image data of a multi-gradation monochromatic half-tone digital image exceeding the number of gradations processable in an OS(operating system) to color image data of a color digital image processable in the OS while image information of the monochromatic half-tone digital image is held. SOLUTION: High-ranking 6 bits of monochromatic half-tone 12 bits (from the bit 11 to the bit 6) shown in M of figure 1 are set as they are respectively to the high-ranking bits of R, G and B of the color 24 bits shown in C of the figure 1. Then, information of remaining low-ranking 6 bits among the monochromatic half-tone 12 bits (from the bit 5 to the bit 0) is set by distributing it to the lower-ranking 2 bits of R, G and B by 2 bits each. It is possible by performing the image conversion like this to convert the multi-gradation monochromatic half-tone digital image to the image data of the color digital image processable in the OS.
