Progress toward understanding human behavior has been hindered by discipline-bound theories, dividing our efforts. Fortunately, these separate endeavors are converging and can be effectively integrated. Focusing on the fundamental features of picoeconomics, expectancy theory, cumulative prospect theory, and need theory, we construct a temporal motivational theory (TMT). TMT appears consistent with the major findings from many other investigations, including psychobiology and behaviorism. The potential implications of TMT are numerous, affecting our understanding on a wide range of topics, including group behavior, job design, stock market behavior, and goal setting.

Integrating Theories of Motivation

Intersection management is one of the most challenging problems within the transport system. Traffic light-based methods have been efficient but are not able to deal with the growing mobility and social challenges. On the other hand, the advancements of automation and communications have enabled cooperative intersection management, where road users, infrastructure, and traffic control centers are able to communicate and coordinate the traffic safely and efficiently. Major techniques and solutions for cooperative intersections are surveyed in this paper for both signalized and nonsignalized intersections, whereas focuses are put on the latter. Cooperative methods, including time slots and space reservation, trajectory planning, and virtual traffic lights, are discussed in detail. Vehicle collision warning and avoidance methods are discussed to deal with uncertainties. Concerning vulnerable road users, pedestrian collision avoidance methods are discussed. In addition, an introduction to major projects related to cooperative intersection management is presented. A further discussion of the presented works is given with highlights of future research topics. This paper serves as a comprehensive survey of the field, aiming at stimulating new methods and accelerating the advancement of automated and cooperative intersections.

Cooperative Intersection Management: A Survey

Hub networks play an important role in many transportation and telecommunications systems. This paper introduces a new model called the hub arc location model. Rather than locate discrete hub facilities, this model locates hub arcs, which have reduced unit flow costs. Four special cases of the general hub arc location model are examined in detail. We provide motivation for the new models, and present examples and optimal solutions, using data for U.S. air passenger traffic. Results are used to compare optimal costs, hub locations, and hub arc locations with corresponding hub median optimal solutions. The results reveal interesting spatial patterns and help identify promising cities and regions for hubs. A companion paper (Campbell et al. 2005) presents integer programming formulations and solution algorithms for the new hub arc problems. It also provides details and computation times for these solution algorithms.

Hub Arc Location Problems: Part I-Introduction and Results

We introduce a novel heuristic global optimization method, energy landscape paving (ELP), which combines core ideas from energy surface deformation and tabu search. In appropriate limits, ELP reduces to existing techniques. The approach is very general and flexible and is illustrated here on two protein folding problems. For these examples, the technique gives faster convergence to the global minimum than previous approaches.

In this paper, the author presents an overview of the growth in the use of computer simulation in traffic systems. The history behind the growth is described, followed by a discussion of application areas. New trends and applications in traffic simulation are described including demand analysis, parallel computing, cellular automata, and rule based simulation.

Simulation of Traffic Systems - An Overview

The main goal of this research was to update the basic saturation flow values of signalized intersections. The secondary goal was to analyze the effects of certain external factors (such as weather, road, and traffic conditions) on saturation flow. The updating is based on extensive field measurements and simulations. Altogether, about 39,000 queues were observed in this study. Field measurements at 30 locations were made according to the method described in the Highway Capacity Manual and simulations were done with the Helsinki University of Technology HUT-SIM simulator, which was calibrated and carefully validated for Finnish road conditions. A summary of calibration parameters is also presented. The new base value for straight-through lanes is 1, 940 vehicles per hour; the previous value was 1, 700 vehicles per hour. Saturation Flows at Signal-Group-Controlled Traffic Signals

This paper examines the nature of uncertainty present in transport planning and explores appropriate mathematical treatment. Two types of uncertainty are dealt with: vagueness and ambiguity. The former refers to the uncertainty caused by the lack of definition of words, and the latter refers to the uncertainty caused by the lack of information about the subject matter. The mathematical framework that can deal with vagueness is fuzzy set theory, and that for ambiguity is evidence theory. Differences in the nature of problems that these two types of uncertainty present are examined. How to apply the appropriate mathematical technique to model these types of uncertainty is discussed, along with the basic properties of fuzzy set theory and evidence theory. Domains of transport problems that are conducive to these theories are explained, and the issues that need to be examined when using these theories are discussed.
