Beyond Compare: Comparative Method after the Transnational Turn

This is one of the first studies evaluating the experience of gentrification in a developing country. The conservation of the historic centre of Puebla, Mexico, is analysed with particular attention to the uses to which renovated properties are put and the nature and motivations of the agents involved. Gentrification in Puebla constitutes the symbolic reconquest of a space over which the local middle classes feared they had lost moral authority. The class and 'race' symbolism of conservation and gentrification is emphasised.

Atourist arriving in Mexico City in the early summer of 1968 would have found the capital awash in color, an air of expectation and optimism everywhere palpable as the country finalized last-minute preparations for the Olympic Games, scheduled to commence that October. Yellow, blue, and pink banners framing a white dove of peace lit up major thoroughfares. Throughout the city, numerous commercial billboards had been replaced with photographs of cultural and physical activity related to the Games; in one corner, was the omnipresent peace dove. Other enormous images laced the skyline: caricatured line drawings of school children, a family portrait, anonymous faces in a crowd. “Everything is Possible in Peace,” the new billboards proclaimed in a multitude of languages—set against a background of hot pink and vibrant yellow. Along a designated “Route of Friendship” that extended across the southern part of the city, large abstract sculptures of brightly painted concrete by artists of international renown could be observed in various stages of completion. The country's official logo for the Games—“MEXICO68”—whose evident Op Art influence was designed to evoke a moving, modernist feel, was omnipresent; so too were the hundreds of young edecanes (event hostesses), whose uniformed miniskirts and pantsuits were emblazoned with a graphic representation of the logo. The viewer could scarcely have avoided the sensation of a city, a country on the verge of something spectacular.

Showcasing the 'Land of Tomorrow': Mexico and the 1968 Olympics

The article focuses on the 1910 centennial celebration of Mexico's war of independence in Mexico City in order to examine the notions of modernity, cosmopolitanism and nationalism that were held by the Porfirian elite. The article first maps the celebration and thus identifies an ideal city – of comfort, modernity, style, and patriotism – that the Porfirian elite created from the 1880s to the 1910s within Mexico City. Second, it takes tours around the ideal city in order to examine how ideal views of social order, material and cultural progress, nation-building and cosmopolitanism acquired spatial and graphic expressions in the city.

On the one hand, from a distance sociology, anthropology, folklore, and ethnology appear to be obsolete buildings more or less well constructed, with hypotheses, causes, proofs, and laws. America is present, for instance, in the use that Friedrich Engels made of the studies of American natives by the United States anthropologist Lewis Henry Morgan, in the ambivalent fascination of the French sociologist Maurice Halbwachs with the United States in defining the concept of standard of living, and in the construction of the weightiest utterance in the entire river of scientific words that formed the nineteenth century: race. Likewise, the United States gradually americanized the social sciences as its own product. By the 1920s, Americathe continent-was the seat of cosmopolitan scientific language, visible in the Chicago School of sociology, the urban studies of Robert Park, or the archaeological and anthropological studies of Mexican, Peruvian, or Brazilian indigenistas (who found in indigenous peoples the bedrock for their respective nationalisms and great aesthetic and cultural potential).
