UNLABELLED The studies show a dental practitioner as a subject of a wide variety of physical and psychological ailments. It is induced or aggravated by the work specificity and greatly affects the health of dental professionals. Therefore, general health of dentists, especially effect of dental activity on it, is present-day, important and as a matter of fact not well documented subject. The aim of our review is to summarize and ascertain dental practice-related disorders influencing the physical and psychological health of practitioner. Also we would like to highlight the most vulnerable systems of the dental professional and to survey the best methods to overcome these ailments. RESULTS There is growing body of evidence that suggests surprisingly high vulnerability within the dental profession to certain disorders and afflictions that can be categorized as practice-related. CONCLUSIONS In different countries dentists reported having poor general health and suffer from various health-related problems. To enjoy and be satisfied with their professional and personal lives, dentists must be aware of the importance to maintain good physical and mental health.

In a profession which combines skillful precision with aesthetics many dentists are vulnerable to stress-yet most practitioners minimize or deny the suggestion that they face "burn-out'. Regular seminars on pressures pertaining to dental practice would provide support to practitioners (at risk).

America's nearly seven million health care workers (54a) face essentially all of the hazards found throughout our nation's business and industry, and more. These workers confront dangers normally associated with the construction and manufacturing industries, restaurants, research laboratories, boiler rooms, print shops, and even agriculture. Thus, they contend with heavy lifting, asbestos, and ethylene oxide (ETO); cuts, burns, and hepatitis; radia­ tion, exotic chemicals, and infectious organisms; noise and corrosives; sol­ vents; and pesticides. They also face the very special challenges presented by patient care. And they may work in shifts that sometimes rotate. It is not surprising then, that 6. 23 per 100 full-time health care workers had occupa­ tional injuries or illnesses in 1984 with a loss of 57.1 work days per 100 full-time workers. These figures are high, compared to other service occupa­ tions, except, for example, hotel workers (l4b). These data represent all health care workers, including those in ambulatory settings who have a low incidence of accidents. Sixty-five percent of health care personnel work in nursing and personal care facilities and hospitals: 1 1.6 per 100 full-time nursing and personal care facilities workers and 7.3 per 100 full-time hospital workers are hurt or sickened by work per year and lose 121 and 63 work days per 100 full-time workers, respectively. I: The Danger in Our Mouths The use of mercury in dental amalgam fillings has been an accepted practice in the United States for more than a hundred years. So it should come as no surprise that most people assume the silvery-looking fillings in their mouths are safe and nontoxic, posing no risk to their health. But is this assumption well founded? An analysis of the scientific evidence on mercury can only lead to a resounding “no.” Mercury is a toxic heavy metal that can have disastrous health effects. Research shows that mercury is associated with disorders such as multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, depression and reduced immune functioning. Mercury exposure also presents a risk to fetuses in mothers who have amalgam fillings. California recognized this risk in November 2000 when it became the first state to require dentists to inform their patients that amalgam fillings may cause birth defects. It is of interest that the studies proving mercury’s toxicity often come from the journals of conventional dentistry and medicine. Even so, orthodox dentistry continues to assure us that the mercury in our mouths is safe. This disconnect between our long-standing assumption that mercury amalgams are nontoxic and the evidence showing otherwise reminds us of an important principle: What has been accepted as true is not always so scientifically.
