Person detection and tracking techniques may be used to estimate pedestrian traffic in locations equipped with cameras. Persons detected in video data from the cameras may help determine existing pedestrian traffic data. Future pedestrian traffic estimation may be performed to estimate pedestrian traffic characteristics (such as volume, direction, etc.) Such traffic estimation may be provided to users for route planning/congestion information. A traffic map can be derived based on the number of people at or expected to be at certain locations. The map may be provided to users to provide traffic data and/or estimations.

Techniques describe constructing a location and activity recommendation model to identify relationships between locations and activities. To construct the model, the process obtains global positioning system (GPS) logs of geographical locations collected over time and identifies stay points representing locations visited by an individual user. The process also identifies points of interest in a region using a database and correlates a relationship between activity to activity by submitting queries to a search engine. The information gathered is used to fill locations and activities in a location-activity matrix. Recommendations may be made for a location and/or activity when given a user query, based on a user's present geographical location, or a prediction of a user's interest.

Collaborative Location and Activity Recommendations

Techniques for searching and providing geographical regions are described. The process searches and recommends points of interests based on a user-specified region. Points of interests include spatial objects (e.g., buildings, landmarks, rivers, parks) and their distributions in a geographical region. The process searches and recommends points of interests by partitioning a spatial map into grids to identify representative categories located in each of the grids. In response to the user-specified region, a set of geographical candidates containing the representative categories is retrieved. The process determines whether the user-specified region and the set of geographical candidates include similar or common representative categories and similar or common spatial distributions of the representative categories. Then the process provides the top ranked set of geographical candidates that have similar content information.

A network-connected communication system is provided, via which individuals may engage in dialog with one or more dialog members. Differing views of the dialog may be presented to different individuals, based on the viewer's association with the dialog and/or variable privacy settings associated with the dialog. Dialogs may be initiated as private conversations, with members electing to make available views of the conversation to individuals other than the dialog members. Tools, such as redaction tools, may be provided for dialog participants to control availability of dialog content outside of dialog members. A dialog display user interface may be provided to dialog members, which includes a toggle permitting members to toggle between public and private dialog views, thereby highlighting differences in how a dialog is rendered to different audiences. Association-based and variable privacy may also be implemented in connection with online forums and restricted access communities. Such privacy-enabling systems may integrate to receive dialog content from another messaging system, and/or to disseminate privacy-conscious views of dialogs to external systems such as messaging platforms, social networks and search engines.

A method and system are provided for remotely analyzing multimedia content, in particular video, and extracting information from such multimedia content. The system analyses, e.g. a video file by way of an FTP, file upload or streaming data etc., and configuration settings specified in one embodiment by a separate entity at one of multiple server entities. The system also comprises one or more remote server entities utilizing data storage and data processing capabilities. In one embodiment the client sends a video source and configuration settings over a network, the remote server accepts the video source, generates configuration settings, and a data processing module analyzes the video content to extract data from the video.

A method and system are provided for modeling and optimizing the performance of transportation networks, e.g. for traffic signal retiming. The modeling and optimization may be implemented by obtaining a video signal from a camera at a first intersection; processing data from the video signal to determine at least one value indicative of a corresponding traffic flow through the first intersection; sending the at least one value to a remote processing entity via a wireless network to enable the remote processing entity to update a model of the transportation network, the transportation network comprising the first intersection and at least a second intersection; receiving from the remote processing entity, an instruction for a controller at the first intersection, the instruction having been determined from an update of the model based on data from at least the second intersection; and having the instruction implemented by the controller at the first intersection to optimize at least a portion of the transportation network.

System and method for modeling and optimizing the performance of transportation networks

To address problems that video imaging systems and platforms face when analyzing image and video content for detection and feature extraction, a solution is provided in which accumulating significant amounts of data suitable for training and learning analytics is leveraged to improve over time, the classifiers used to perform the detection and feature extraction, by employing a larger search space and generate additional and more complex classifiers through distributed processing. A distributed learning platform is therefore provided, which is configured for operating on large scale data, in a true big data paradigm. The learning platform is operable to empirically estimate a set of optimal feature vectors and a set of discriminant functions using a parallelizable learning algorithm. A method of adding new data into a database utilized by such a learning platform is also provided. The method comprises identifying an unrepresented sample space; determining new data samples associated with the unrepresented sample space; and adding the new data samples to the database.
