Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) constitute one of the most promising third-millennium technologies and have wide range of applications in our surrounding environment. The reason behind the vast adoption of WSNs in various applications is that they have tremendously appealing features, e.g., low production cost, low installation cost, unattended network operation, autonomous and longtime operation. WSNs have started to merge with the Internet of Things (IoT) through the introduction of Internet access capability in sensor nodes and sensing ability in Internet-connected devices. Thereby, the IoT is providing access to huge amount of data, collected by the WSNs, over the Internet. Hence, the security of IoT should start with foremost securing WSNs ahead of the other components. However, owing to the absence of a physical line-of-defense, i.e., there is no dedicated infrastructure such as gateways to watch and observe the flowing information in the network, security of WSNs along with IoT is of a big concern to the scientific community. More specifically, for the application areas in which CIA (confidentiality, integrity, availability) has prime importance, WSNs and emerging IoT technology might constitute an open avenue for the attackers. Besides, recent integration and collaboration of WSNs with IoT will open new challenges and problems in terms of security. Hence, this would be a nightmare for the individuals using these systems as well as the security administrators who are managing those networks. Therefore, a detailed review of security attacks towards WSNs and IoT, along with the techniques for prevention, detection, and mitigation of those attacks are provided in this paper. In this text, attacks are categorized and treated into mainly two parts, most or all types of attacks towards WSNs and IoT are investigated under that umbrella: “Passive Attacks” and “Active Attacks”. Understanding these attacks and their associated defense mechanisms will help paving a secure path towards the proliferation and public acceptance of IoT technology.

Security of the Internet of Things: Vulnerabilities, Attacks, and Countermeasures

In the last decade, mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) have emerged as a major next generation wireless networking technology. However, MANETs are vulnerable to various attacks at all layers, including in particular the network layer, because the design of most MANET routing protocols assumes that there is no malicious intruder node in the network. In this paper, we present a survey of the main types of attack at the network layer, and we then review intrusion detection and protection mechanisms that have been proposed in the literature. We classify these mechanisms as either point detection algorithms that deal with a single type of attack, or as intrusion detection systems (IDSs) that can deal with a range of attacks. A comparison of the proposed protection mechanisms is also included in this paper. Finally, we identify areas where further research could focus.

Security of the Internet of Things: Vulnerabilities, Attacks and Countermeasures.

Interest in the area of Mobile Ad-hoc Network (MANET) is growing since last few years because of its practical applications and requirement of communication in mobile devices. However, in comparison to wired network or infrastructure-based wireless network, MANET is particularly vulnerable to security attacks due to its fundamental characteristics, e.g., the open medium, dynamic network topology, autonomous terminal, lack of centralized monitoring and management. The black hole attack is one of such security risks. In this attack, a malicious node falsely advertise shortest path to the destination node with an intension to disrupt the communication. In this paper, we propose a solution to the black hole attack in one of the most prominent routing algorithm, ad-hoc on demand distance vector (AODV) routing, for the MANETs. The proposed method uses promiscuous mode to detect malicious node (black hole) and propagates the information of malicious node to all the other nodes in the network. The simulation results show the efficacy of the proposed method as throughput of the network does not deteriorate in presence of the back holes.

An Efficient Prevention of Black Hole Problem in AODV Routing Protocol in MANET

Mobile Ad-hoc Network (MANET) is a prominent technology in the wireless network in which the mobile nodes operate in a distributed manner and collaborate with each other in order to provide the multi-hop communication between the source and the destination node. Generally, the main assumption considered in the MANET is that each node is a trusted node. However, in a real scenario, there are some unreliable nodes which misbehave and launch the attack in network like black-hole in which the misbehaving nodes attract all the traffic towards itself by giving false information of having a shortest path towards the destination with a very high destination sequence number. In this paper, we discussed different possible nature of the nodes in the network that can lead to the different possible attacks. We have also presented the different classification of the techniques and discussed the merits, drawbacks, and suitability of the various techniques in different scenarios which need to be taken into consideration while designing an efficient protocol.

A survey of black-hole attack mitigation techniques in MANET: merits, drawbacks, and suitability

A mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is an autonomous network that consists of mobile nodes that communicate with each other over wireless links. In the absence of a fixed infrastructure, nodes have to cooperate in order to provide the necessary network functionality. One of the principal routing protocols used in Ad hoc networks is AODV (Ad hoc on demand Distance Vector) protocol. The security of the AODV protocol is threaded by a particular type of attack called ‘Black Hole’ attack. In this attack a malicious node advertises itself as having the shortest path to the destination node. To combat with black hole attack, it is proposed to wait and check the replies from all the neighboring nodes to find a safe route but this approach suffers from high delay. In this paper, an approach is proposed to combat the Black hole attack by using negotiation with neighbors who claim to have a route to destination. the Simulation's results show that the proposed protocol provides better security and also better performance in terms of packet delivery than the conventional AODV in the presence of Black holes with minimal additional delay and Overhead.
