The use of MoS2 nanosheets as oil additives has been proved effective to reduce friction and wear. Furthermore, it has been suggested that the synthesis of MoS2 nanosheets with an ultrathin structure could benefit the friction and wear reduction, as they would penetrate into the contact area easily. In this paper, two-dimensional MoS2 nanosheets were successfully fabricated by a solvothermal method with the aid of oleylamine. Meanwhile, the synthesized MoS2 nanosheets exhibited perfect dispersing stability in paraffin oil, due to the surface modification by oleylamine molecules. The friction and wear properties of the synthesized MoS2 nanosheets as oil additives were investigated using a ball-on-disk tribotester. The results showed that the two-dimensional MoS2 nanosheets exhibited enhanced friction-reducing and antiwear behaviors as compared to the multilayered MoS2 nanosheets. The prominent tribological performance of the two-dimensional MoS2 nanosheets was attributed to the formation of a thick tribofilm inside the wear tracks, which was confirmed by XPS analyses of the rubbing interfaces.

The synthesis of two-dimensional MoS2 nanosheets with enhanced tribological properties as oil additives

Using nanoadditives in lubricants is one of the most effective ways to control friction and wear, which is of great significance for energy conservation, emission reduction, and environmental protection. With the scientific and technological development, great advances have been made in nanolubricant additives in the scientific research and industrial applications. This review summarizes the categories of nanolubricant additives and illustrates the tribological properties of these additives. Based on the component elements of nanomaterials, nanolubricant additives can be divided into three types: nanometal-based, nanocarbon-based, and nanocomposite-based additives. The dispersion stabilities of additives in lubricants are also discussed in the review systematically. Various affecting factors and effective dispersion methods have been investigated in detail. Moreover, the review summarizes the lubrication mechanisms of nanolubricant additives including tribofilm formation, micro-bearing effect, self-repair performance, and synergistic effect. In addition, the challenges and prospects of nanolubricant additives are proposed, which guides the design and synthesis of novel additives with significant lubrication and antiwear properties in the future.

Nanolubricant additives: A review

The tribological behaviors of graphene and graphene oxide (GO) as water-based lubricant additives were evaluated by use of a reciprocating ball-on-plate tribometer for magnesium alloy-steel contacts. Three sets of test conditions were examined to investigate the effect of concentration, the capacity of carrying load and the endurance of the lubrication film, respectively. The results showed that the tribological behaviors of water can be improved by adding the appropriate graphene or GO. Compared with pure deionized water, 0.5 wt.% graphene nanofluids can offer reduction of friction coefficient by 21.9% and reduction of wear rate by 13.5%. Meanwhile, 0.5 wt.% GO nanofluids were found to reduce the friction coefficient and wear rate up to 77.5% and 90%, respectively. Besides this, the positive effect of the GO nanofluids was also more pronounced in terms of the load-carrying capacity and the lubrication film endurance. The wear mechanisms have been tentatively proposed according to the observation of the worn surfaces by field emission scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectrometer (FESEM-EDS) and Raman spectrum as well as the wettability of the nanofluids on the magnesium alloy surface by goniometer.

Tribological Behaviors of Graphene and Graphene Oxide as Water-Based Lubricant Additives for Magnesium Alloy/Steel Contacts

In this paper, we review recent research developments regarding the tribological performances of a series of inorganic nano-additives in lubricating fluids. First, we examine several basic types of inorganic nanomaterials, including metallic nanoparticles, metal oxides, carbon nanomaterials, and “other” nanomaterials. More specifically, the metallic nanoparticles we examine include silver, copper, nickel, molybdenum, and tungsten nanoparticles; the metal oxides include CuO, ZnO, Fe3O4, TiO2, ZrO2, Al2O3, and several double-metal oxides; the carbon nanomaterials include fullerene, carbon quantum dots, carbon nanotubes, graphene, graphene oxides, graphite, and diamond; and the “other” nanomaterials include metal sulfides, rare-earth compounds, layered double hydroxides, clay minerals, hexagonal boron nitride, black phosphorus, and nanocomposites. Second, we summarize the lubrication mechanisms of these nano-additives and identify the factors affecting their tribological performance. Finally, we briefly discuss the challenges faced by inorganic nanoparticles in lubrication applications and discuss future research directions. This review offers new perspectives to improve our understanding of inorganic nano-additives in tribology, as well as several new approaches to expand their practical applications.

Inorganic nanomaterial lubricant additives for base fluids, to improve tribological performance: Recent developments

Molybdenum disulfide quantum dots (MoS2 QDs) are a promising lubricant additive for enhanced engine efficiency. In this study, MoS2 QDs were used as lubricating oil additives for ball-on-disc contact and had adequate dispersity in paroline oil, due to their super small particle size (~3 nm). Tribological results indicate that the friction coefficient of paroline oil with 0.3 wt.% MoS2 QDs reached 0.061, much lower than that of pure paroline oil (0.169), which is due to the formation of a stable tribo-film formed by the MoS2, MoO3, FeS, and FeSO4 composite within the wear track. Synergistic lubrication effects of the tribo-film and ball-bearing effect cooperatively resulted in the lowest friction and wear.
