Environmentally conscious manufacturing and product recovery (ECMPRO): A review of the state of the art

This paper is a survey of the presently available literature on disassembly sequencing, including the papers that are closely related to this topic. Disassembly theory is applied to complex products such as mechanical, electromechanical and electronic appliances. It is required for end-of-life processing and for maintenance and repair. Apart from these applications, disassembly is studied for supporting the analysis of assembly processes. Disassembly sequencing involves the search for all possible disassembly sequences and the selection of the optimum solution out of these. In each application, a slightly different approach can be observed, including level of detail, degrees of freedom, and the role of uncertainty. Disassembly sequencing also plays a major role in the modern design process and is an invaluable tool in concurrent engineering. Its connection with the more detailed or component level and the less detailed level or process level including logistics, is highlighted. This presentation of the state of the art is intended as a stimulus for further research in this interesting field.

Disassembly modeling, planning, and application

This paper presents a multi-criteria optimization model of a disassembly-to-order (DTO) system under uncertainty. The goal of the proposed model is to determine the best combination of the number of each product type to be taken back from the last user and/or collectors. The EOL products are then disassembled for the retrieval of reusable components and materials and resold in order to meet a certain level of demand under a variety of physical, financial and environmental constraints. The surplus components are recycled, stored for usage in subsequent periods or properly disposed. The problem is modeled as a multi-criteria decision-making problem under uncertainty, where the aspiration levels for various goals are more likely to be in the “approximately more (less) than” and/or “more (less) is better” form. We employ fuzzy goal programming technique to solve the problem. When solved, the model provides the number of EOL products to be taken back as well as the number of items reused, recycled, stored and disposed. The values of a host of other performance measures are also obtained, including total profit, materials and items sales revenues, take back cost, transportation costs as well as costs of preparation of EOL products, destructive disassembly, non-destructive disassembly, recycling, storage and disposal. A case example is presented to illustrate the model's implementation.

Disassembly to order system under uncertainty

An agile and environmentally conscious manufacturing paradigm refers to the ability to reconfigure a flexible system quickly, economically, and environmentally responsibly. In modern manufacturing enterprises, e-supply chains integrate Internet and web-based electronic market and are promising systems to achieve agility. A key issue in the strategic logistic planning of integrated e-supply chains (IESCs) is the configuration of the partner network. This paper proposes a single- and multiobjective optimization model to configure the network of IESCs. Considering an Internet-based distributed manufacturing system composed of different stages connected by material and information links, a procedure is presented to select the appropriate links. A set of performance indices is associated with the network links. Single-criterion and multicriteria optimization models are presented under structural constraint definitions. The integer linear programming (ILP) problem solution provides different network structures that allow to improve supply chain (SC) flexibility, agility, and environmental performance in the design process. The proposed optimization strategy is applied to two case studies describing two networks for desktop computer production.

Design and optimization of integrated E-supply chain for agile and environmentally conscious manufacturing

This paper presents a methodology for designing and implementing disassembly plans and processes using Petri nets (PN) for remanufacturing obsolete products. Process modeling and planning using PN are discussed. The proposed PN accommodate product topology and precedence relations during disassembly. Decision values are attached to PN to enable consideration of uncertainty during process execution. The resulting planner guarantees the plan's optimality when product remanufacturing parameters are known. In cases of uncertainty about product parameters, an adaptation scheme is designed and implemented to facilitate the goal of maximum benefit. Three planning and execution algorithms (globally fixed, limited adaptive, adaptive) are presented for disassembly processes. They are demonstrated comprehensively through a robotic disassembly system, and its use is demonstrated in disassembly of a car radio.
