Abstract Minimizing energy loss is of critical importance in the pursuit of attaining high-performance organic solar cells. Interestingly, reorganization energy plays a crucial role in photoelectric conversion processes. However, the understanding of the relationship between reorganization energy and energy losses has rarely been studied. Here, two acceptors, Qx-1 and Qx-2, were developed. The reorganization energies of these two acceptors during photoelectric conversion processes are substantially smaller than the conventional Y6 acceptor, which is beneficial for improving the exciton lifetime and diffusion length, promoting charge transport, and reducing the energy loss originating from exciton dissociation and non-radiative recombination. So, a high efficiency of 18.2% with high open circuit voltage above 0.93 V in the PM6:Qx-2 blend, accompanies a significantly reduced energy loss of 0.48 eV. This work underlines the importance of the reorganization energy in achieving small energy losses and paves a way to obtain high-performance organic solar cells.

This paper reports a study on the effect of different parameters such as charge carriers mobility, electrodes work function, energy gap, series as well as shunt resistances on the performances of an organic photovoltaic cell based on polymer/fullerene P3HT: PCBM. Thus, numerical simulations have been investigated on ITO/PEDOT:PSS/P3HT: PCBM/LiF/Al structure with Analysis of Microelectronic and Photonic Structures the simulation one dimension (AMPS-1D) and General-Purpose Photovoltaic Device Model (GPVDM) softwares. The results show that the optimum efficiency is obtained for electron and hole motility values of 10−4  cm2  V−1  s−1 and 2 × 10−4  cm2  V−1  s−1 , respectively. Moreover, we reported that the ohmic contact for both anode and cathode electrodes of the investigated device remains very important to get the maximum efficiency. Furthermore, when the gap energy increases, the efficiency is considerably improved, and reach's a value of about 5.421%. In addition, in this present work, the complimentary between the both softwares AMPS and GPVDM is also well illustrated as an original modeling approach to investigate the performances of organic photovoltaic cells.

Combined effects of carriers charge mobility and electrodes work function on the performances of polymer/fullerene P3HT:PCBM based organic photovoltaic solar cell

In this paper we report a numerical simulation study for P3HT: IC60BA based organic solar cell with Analysis of Microelectronic and Photonic Structures the simulation one dimension software (AMPS-1D). Indeed, the N-type doping concentration (ND) effect on the organic solar cell performance is done. Moreover, a combination between the P-type doping concentration (NA) and N-type one (ND) is investigated. However, due to the relationship between doping and carriers charge mobility, the effect of ND for different electron mobilities (μn) is also studied. We showed a high efficiency of 5.88% that is achieved for particular values of NA = 1017 cm−3, ND = 2 × 1016 cm−3, μp = 3 × 10−4 cm2 V−1 s−1 and μn = 7 × 10−4 cm2 V−1 s−1. Thus, we noticed that the P-type doping remains more promising than N-type one for the device performance improvement. Furthermore, the validation of the obtained results by those experimentally reported in literature is realized. In addition, the doping of other BHJ OSC devices consisting of P3HT: IC70BA is studied; an optimum efficiency of about 6.32% is reached.
