Distinction: A Social Critique of the Judgement of Taste

The internationalisation of higher education — a facet of broader processes of globalisation — has resulted in increased study-related travel, and the development of policies to attract international students. Nevertheless, in the context of a strong drive to recruit international students, little is known about how they are faring during their study abroad. This paper addresses the gap in research, analysing the experiences of international students studying in Irish Higher Education Institutions, drawing on nationally representative data from the Eurostudent IV study. The findings show that students’ satisfaction with study while abroad is shaped by a number of different factors including, first and foremost, students’ satisfaction with their education institution and subjective rating of their health.

Predicting International Higher Education Students’ Satisfaction with their Study in Ireland

Drawing on curriculum differentiation theory, this paper discusses exemptions from learning Irish granted to Irish post-primary students. In order to explore the profile of 
students granted such exemptions, the study utilises data from a national longitudinal study, Growing Up in Ireland. Additional information is provided by administrative data collected by the Department of Education and Skills to show trends in the number of exemptions granted over time. The findings show that factors impacting on being exempt include gender, social class, having a special educational need at primary school and being born outside Ireland.

This study, commissioned by the Higher Education Authority, examines the costs associated with attending college for an increasingly diverse student population. Drawing predominantly on a range of existing ESRI data sources, the analysis will examine costs over a range of fields of study, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, for a broad cross-section of students, including those with no financial support from the family, mature students, students with dependants and students with a disability.

Reasons for Persistent Absenteeism among Irish Primary School Pupils

An increasing amount of research now relates to full-time higher education students who work part-time during their study. However, little is known about this issue in the Irish context, despite the fact that the latter provides an interesting case-study due to its unprecedented economic growth in recent years and subsequent changes in the labour market. This paper attempts to address this gap in research and reports on a postal survey carried out among 3,900 higher education students. It aims to establish the profile of full-time higher education students engaged in part-time work during term-time. It also explores the motivation for engaging in paid work and possible implications of work-load on levels of life satisfaction. It is argued in this paper that inadequate policy attention to the changing profile of higher education students, their work-load and needs risks reinforcing inequalities among students.
