This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for \"experimenters\") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment. It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. Sustainability assessment is being increasingly viewed as an important tool to aid in the shift towards sustainability. However, this is a new and evolving concept and there remain very few examples of effective sustainability assessment processes implemented anywhere in the world. Sustainability assessment is often described as a process by which the implications of an initiative on sustainability are evaluated, where the initiative can be a proposed or existing policy, plan, programme, project, piece of legislation, or a current practice or activity. However, this generic definition covers a broad range of different processes, many of which have been described in the literature as 'sustainability assessment'. This article seeks to provide some clarification by reflecting on the different approaches described in the literature as being forms of sustainability assessment, and evaluating them in terms of their potential contributions to sustainability. Many of these are actually examples of 'integrated assessment', derived from environmental impact assessment (EIA) and strategic environmental assessment (SEA), but which have been extended to incorporate social and economic considerations as well as environmental ones, reflecting a 'triple bottom line' (TBL) approach to sustainability. These integrated assessment processes typically either seek to minimise 'unsustainability', or to achieve TBL objectives. Both aims may, or may not, result in sustainable practice. We present an alternative conception of sustainability assessment, with the more ambitious aim of seeking to determine whether or not an initiative is actually sustainable. We term such processes 'assessment for sustainability'. 'Assessment for sustainability' firstly requires that the concept of sustainability be well-defined. The article compares TBL approaches and principles-based approaches to developing such sustainability criteria, concluding that the latter are more appropriate, since they avoid many of the inherent limitations of the triple-bottom-line as a conception of sustainability.

System of experimental design : engineering methods to optimize quality and minimize costs

The general principles of green chemistry guide the design of environmentally benign products and processes. It is known that the efficient utilization of carbon resources and carbon recycling are of great importance for the sustainable development of our society, and there are many related challenging scientific issues to be solved. Herein we attempt a holistic view on carbon resource processing, utilization, and recycling, and we call this “green carbon science”. We will discuss the definition and the four key principles of green carbon science and highlight some related fields including petroleum refining, the production of liquid fuels and chemicals from coal and methane, and transformations of CO2 and biomass into fuels and chemicals.

Green Carbon Science: Scientific Basis for Integrating Carbon Resource Processing, Utilization, and Recycling

Taking into account the growing interest in microalgae to be used as raw material for biodiesel production, this research is aimed at analyzing the rheological behaviour of microalgae suspensions (Chlorella sp) at different culture times under eight different conditions (temperature, salinity and CO2, NO3 and PO4 levels) in order to estimate the energy demands of each step, with the purpose of optimizing a continuous feed tubular bioreactor construction. For each condition, it was calculated the biomass and oil yields, so as to correlate these results with rheological parameters. The suspension results indicated that the microalgae Chlorella sp is a non-Newtonian material with dilatant characteristics; the processing time hardly exerted an influence on the rheograms of the suspension of the microalgae Chlorella sp, except for the simultaneous conditions of low salinity and low CO2 content; NO3 and PO4 contents and the amount of supplements influenced the rheological parameters of the suspension of the microalgae Chlorella sp, when in low concentration of CO2 and low salinity levels.

Este artigo tem por objetivo verificar como o consumo consciente pode contribuir para uma sociedade mais sustentavel, assim foram analisadas algumas das praticas da empresa Natura. O estudo aborda os principais conceitos que definem a sustentabilidade, observando sua evolucao historica e seu contexto vinculado a sociedade do consumo, analisando algumas premissas e praticas que podem gerar o consumo consciente, tendo este como uma solucao para propagacao da sustentabilidade na sociedade atual. A metodologia de pesquisa aplicada no presente trabalho teve sua base sedimentada no metodo exploratorio, em levantamento bibliografico publicados na internet e em um estudo de caso a fim de verificar a aplicabilidade das teorias apresentadas. A partir das informacoes colhidas pode-se verificar que a conscientizacao dessa tematica tanto por parte das organizacoes quanto das pessoas e a chave para o inicio de um novo comportamento capaz de posicionar a sociedade em um caminho sustentavel para seu futuro.

O Consumo Consciente como Fator Determinante para a Propagação da Sustentabilidade na Sociedade

This paper will address issues related to strategy, quality and management of customers and suppliers, and its main objective is to demonstrate the benefits of cooperation between customers and suppliers in the supply chain. A case is presented about a Brazilian company with assets in several sectors of the economy that implemented a program to reward the cooperation of its key suppliers and obtained several benefits with this program. Finally, it is concluded that issues such as identification of the real needs and expectations of stakeholders, the philosophy of quality at source, consolidation of the customer base and suppliers and cooperation between companies are key points for improving business performance, at every link in the supply chain. Improving performance by improving the relationship with the companies in the supply chain

In a move to go beyond pedagogical concerns for engineering teaching and learning and expand to other higher education courses and other professionals, this study compared the use of Design Thinking as a tool to pedagogically mobilize courses in Business Administration, Design, Nursing and Pedagogy. The results showed that the same pedagogical concern of engineering was shared with the compared courses. The relationships between students were fundamental for solving problems, as proposed by Design Thinking, as well as the relationships between the classes of a given course with their concerns about the professional profile that is being formed.

Design thinking as active teaching methodology at the university -comparative study between courses

Medidas inovadoras, como o desenvolvimento de biocombustiveis de terceira geracao  (3G), tem sido consideradas chave para a reducao da emissao de gases de efeito estufa  e do aquecimento global. Esses combustiveis sao produzidos a partir de cultivo de  microalgas, organismos unicelulares capazes de captar e converter dioxido de carbono (CO2) em hidrogenio (H2) e oxigenio (O2) durante a fotossintese. Microalgas capazes  de armazenar lipideos podem ser utilizadas para a producao de biodiesel, enquanto o H2  liberado durante a fotossintese pode ser armazenado e utilizado como combustivel. Desta  forma, esta revisao tem como objetivo explorar os parâmetros e as condicoes de cultivo de microalgas em diferentes escalas, alem de apresentar as vantagens da sua utilizacao  para a producao de biodiesel e biohidrogenio.
