Clinical uses of lithium salts.

The acute toxicity of cesium given intraperitoneally (IP) as CsCl in mice is characterized by autonomic upset and by a multiphasic excitant‐depressant action on the central nervous system. The predominantly depressant action can progress to respiratory embarassment, cyanosis, spinal convulsions and death. Light microscopy of mice treated with 2.0 mEq Cs+ kg‐1 IP for 14 days showed lymphoid hyperplasia in small intestine. Measurement of tissue cesium by the proton‐induced x‐ray emission (PIXE) technique is convenient and reproducible. Cesium displays a generalized bioactivity that merits further study.

Cesium in mammals: acute toxicity, organ changes and tissue accumulation

Evaluation of the effect of chronic exposure to 137Cesium on sleep-wake cycle in rats.

Depuis l'accident de Tchernobyl, le principal probleme auquel sera confrontee la population de l'ex-URSS dans les 50 a 70 ans a venir est une contamination chronique par des radionucleides. L'une des rares experimentations menees dans ce domainea montre que le metabolisme des neurotransmetteurs etait perturbe dans le systeme nerveux central du rat apres un mois d'alimentation a base d'avoine contaminee par du eium 137 Cs. Notre experimentation a pour objectif d'etudier les effets de l'U appauvri ou du eium 137 Cs sur les metabolismes de deux neurotransmetteurs dans differentes structures cerebrales chez le rat. La serotonine et la dopamine ont ete choisies car leur metabolisme est perturbe apres une irradiation externe, meme a faibles doses. La dopamine, la serotonine et certains de leurs catabolites ont ete doses par HPLC couplee a un detecteur electrochimique dans cinq structures cerebrales chez des rats contamines pendant un mois par l'eau de boisson (40 mg U.L -1 ou 6.5 Bq 137 Cs.mL -1 ). Dans les cinq structures etudiees (striatum, hippocampe, cortex cerebral, thalamus et cervelet), aucune difference significative n'a ete mise en evidence entre les rats temoins et les rats contamines. Ces resultats ne concordent pas avec ceux decrits precedemment par d'autres chercheurs.

Effect of U and 137Cs chronic contamination on dopamine and serotonin metabolism in the central nervous system of the rat.

The effects of RbCl and CsCl on voluntary intake of ethanol solution by rats preferring ethanol solution 5% (w/w) over water as the drinking fluid was studied as a function of the dose given and the vehicle injected. Administration of RbCl or CsCl, 0.5 mEq/kg/day or 1.5 mEq/kg/day for three consecutive days, did not alter amounts of ethanol consumed. Repeated administration of RbCl or CsCl, 3.0 mEq/kg/day for three days, produced some moderate reduction in ethanol consumption. Simultaneous injection of RbCl (1.5 mEq/kg) and CsCl (1.5 mEq/kg) resulted in greater and profound lasting decrease in ethanol drinking. The later treatment did not alter specific activities of rat liver alcohol-and aldehyde dehydrogenase from saline treated controls. In general, dissolving the chloride salt of the alkali metals in saline resulted in greater effects on ethanol drinking than that determined after identical doses injected with water as the vehicle. The possible mechanism(s) underlying the effects of alkali metal salts used are suggested.
