A seamless solution transparently addresses the characteristics of nomadic systems, and enables existing network applications to run reliably in mobile environments. The solution extends the enterprise network, letting network managers provide mobile users with easy access to the same applications as stationary users without sacrificing reliability or centralized management. The solution combines advantages of existing wire-line network standards with emerging mobile standards to create a solution that works with existing network applications. A Mobility Management Server coupled to the mobile network maintains the state of each of any number of Mobile End Systems and handles the complex session management required to maintain persistent connections to the network and to other peer processes. If a Mobile End System becomes unreachable, suspends, or changes network address (e.g., due to roaming from one network interconnect to another), the Mobility Management Server maintains the connection to the associated peer task—allowing the Mobile End System to maintain a continuous connection even though it may temporarily lose contact with its network medium. In one example, Mobility Management Server communicates with Mobile End Systems using Remote Procedure Call and Internet Mobility Protocols.

Method and apparatus for providing mobile and other intermittent connectivity in a computing environment

A system and method of pushing user-selected data items from a host system to a user's mobile data communication device upon detecting the occurrence of one or more user-defined event triggers is provided. The user may then move (or file) the data items to a particular folder within a folder hierarchy stored in the mobile data communication device, or may execute some other system operation on the data item. Software operating at the mobile device and the host system then synchronizes the folder hierarchy of the mobile device with a folder hierarchy of the host system, and any actions executed on the data items at the mobile device are then automatically replicated on the same data items stored at the host system, thus eliminating the need for the user to manually replicate actions at the host system that have been executed at the mobile data communication device.

Disclosed herein are systems, methods, and non-transitory computer-readable storage media for receiving data from a giver at a first time, the data being used to identify a merchant at which a gift from the giver to a recipient is redeemable. The system presents a group of merchants associated with the data to the giver, each merchant of the group of merchants offering a promotion in connection with the gift. The system receives from the giver a selection of a chosen merchant from the group of merchants, the chosen merchant having an associated promotion. The system then generates a policy comprising the gift, the chosen merchant, and the associated promotion such that upon receiving an indication of a triggering event caused by the recipient, the system can apply the gift and the associated promotion according to the policy.

The present invention provides network management of a network or multiple networks, using a Web client, and including multimedia and hypermedia capability. The present invention provides a unified, remote, graphical, transparent interface for Web users, working at a Web client, to a variety of managed networks. The present invention receives requests from a Web client forwarded by a Web server and interacts with the managed networks and their associated objects to obtain information. The present invention then converts this information in real time to hypermedia document format in HTTP and HTML, and transmits this information to the Web client via the Web server, appearing to the client as information in a Web file. This permits a Web user to manage multiple networks and access multiple networks via a single Web client, thus providing a unification of the management interface for dissimilar managed networks, and devices.

The present invention includes transmitting a data packet to the gateway, including control data continuing a plurality of commands to be executed by the gateway. A device is provided that interfaces with existing point of sale credit card reading devices, and furnishes the option of transmitting data over either the existing modem installation or a radio frequency data communication network. The device scans the information encoded on the credit card to determine which data transmission path is appropriate for a particular transaction. The device software generates the necessary signals to simulate the normal interaction between the POS cardreader device and a modem. The software also converts between serial and packetized data in order to request and receive credit card purchase authorizations over the radio frequency data communication network.

Another feature of the method and system is an application loader that dynamically sizes and, as necessary, reconfigures the available memory to permit multiple applications to reside simultaneously on the target system by resolving addresses in the target system at the time an application of interest is downloaded to the target system.
