A control system and method for simultaneously regulating the operation of a plurality of different types of switching power converters. The system utilizes in regulating the power converters sampled data and nonlinear feedback control loops.

A method and system is provided for programming the digital filter compensation coefficients of a digitally controlled switched mode power supply within a distributed power system. The distributed power system comprises a plurality of point-of-load (POL) regulators each comprising at least one power switch adapted to convey power to a load and a digital controller adapted to control operation of the power switch responsive to a feedback measurement. The digital controller further comprises a digital filter having a transfer function defined by plural filter coefficients. A serial data bus operatively connects each of the plurality of POL regulators. A system controller is connected to the serial data bus and is adapted to communicate digital data to the plurality of POL regulators via the serial data bus. The digital data includes programming data for programming the plural filter coefficients. The system controller further comprises a user interface adapted to receive the programming data therefrom.

Method and system for communicating filter compensation coefficients for a digital power control system

A highly phased power regulation (converter) system having an improved control feature is provided. A controller, such as a digital signal processor or microprocessor, receives digital information from a plurality of power conversion blocks and transmits control commands in response to the information. The controller is able to change the mode of operation of the system and/or re-phase the power blocks to accommodate a dynamic load requirement, occasions of high transient response or detection of a fault. A compensation block within the controller is used to regulate the output voltage and provide stability to the system. In one embodiment, the controller is implemented as a PID compensator controller. In another embodiment, a microprocessor is able to receive feedback on its own operation thus providing enabling the controller to anticipate and predict conditions by analyzing precursor data.

System and method for highly phased power regulation using adaptive compensation control

This paper describes an innovative digital control architecture for low-voltage, high-current dc-dc converters, based on a combination of current-programmed control and variable frequency operation. The key feature of the proposed architecture is the low complexity: only two digital-to-analog converters (DACs) with low resolution (7-b) are used for control. An original control algorithm is used to reduce quantization effects to negligible levels, in spite of the low resolution of the DACs. Thanks to this algorithm, both static and dynamic output voltage regulation are improved with respect to traditional digital solutions. Adaptive voltage positioning and active current sharing are inherently provided by the new architecture. A detailed description of the control strategy is given with reference to a single-phase buck converter. Extension to multiphase converters is straightforward. The digital control architecture is experimentally verified on a FPGA-based four-phase prototype buck converter operating at 350 kHz/phase. Output voltage tolerance within /spl plusmn/0.5% is experimentally demonstrated, along with negligible quantization effects and fast transient response. The features and the performance of the proposed architecture make it a valuable candidate for the control of next generation voltage regulator modules.

An innovative digital control architecture for low-Voltage, high-current DC-DC converters with tight voltage regulation

Methods and circuitry for combining the outputs of multiphase power converters which greatly improves the transient response of the power conversion system are presented in a variety of embodiments. Transformers (e.g., 59, 60, 61, 62) may be used to accomplish the combining function, and with properly phased and connected windings it is possible to achieve a great reduction in output ripple current and a simultaneous reduction in transistor ripple current, which give the designer freedom to reduce the value of the system output inductor (e.g., 68), improving transient response.

Multiple power converter system using combining transformers

A digital voltage regulator has an input terminal (20) coupled to an input voltage source (12), an output terminal (22) coupled to a load (14), and a plurality of switching circuits (24) to alternately couple and decouple the input terminal (20) to the output terminal (22). An estimated current is calculated for each switching circuit (24), each estimated current representing a current passing through an inductor (34) associated with the switching circuit (24). A total desired output current to pass throught the inductor (34) is calculated which will maintain an output voltage at the output terminal (22) substantially constant. The switching circuits (24) are controlled based on the estimated current and the total desired output current so that a total current passing through the inductor (34) is approximately equal to the total desired output current.

Method and apparatus for digital voltage regulation

A digital control system for a voltage regulator calculates an estimated current representing a current passing through each inductor associated with a switching circuit. A desired total output current is calculated which will maintain an output voltage at the output terminal at a substantially constant level. Upper current limit and a lower current limit are calculated and the switching circuit to is caused couple an input terminal to an output terminal when the estimated current falls below the lower current limit, and caused to couple the output terminal to ground when the estimated current exceeds the upper current limit. Also, the estimated current may be compared to an individual current to trigger the switching circuit.

Method and apparatus for control of a power transistor in a digital voltage regulator

A voltage regulator coupled to an unregulated DC input voltage source by an input terminal, and to a load by an output terminal is disclosed. The voltage regulator converts an input voltage at the input terminal to an output voltage at the output terminal. The voltage regulator includes a master controller and one or more slaves, and the master controller and each slave can communicate using a ring communication scheme. A command generated by the master controller can be passed from the master controller to the subsequent slaves.
