In the seven years since the introduction of the tablet (Apple iPad) in 2010, the use of software for smart mobile devices has grown rapidly in popularity and has become a hotly debated issue in the field of education and child development. However, the rise in popularity of mobile applications (apps) mainly addressed to young children is not in line with a corresponding increase in their quality, as there is conflicting evidence about the real value and suitability of educational apps. The purpose of this study was to examine whether self-proclaimed educational apps for Greek preschoolers have been designed in accordance with developmentally appropriate standards to contribute to the social, emotional and cognitive development of children in formal and informal learning environments. The study results were discouraging. The majority of the apps aimed to teach children the basics about numbers and letters. Overall, they were drill-and-practice-style, based on a low level of thinking skills, thereby promoting rote learning, and were unable to contribute to a deeper conceptual understanding of certain concepts. High quality educational apps are hard to find.Self-proclaimed educational apps do not meet the developmental needs of preschoolers.There is a need for a reliable and effective framework for evaluating mobile content.This study suggests avenues of investigation for the design of apps.

Computational Thinking is argued to be an essential skill for the workforce of the 21st century. As a skill, Computational Thinking should be taught in all schools, employing computational ideas integrated into other disciplines. Up until now, questions about how Computational Thinking can be effectively taught have been underexplored preventing efforts to cross the large gap between early adopters and the early majority, conceptualized as the Computer Science Education chasm. A promising strategy to cross the chasm is underway in Switzerland. Switzerland recently introduced a national curriculum, called Lehrplan 21, mandating Computer Science Education. This mandate requires the Computer Science education of elementary and middle school students. In 2017, the School of Education of Northwestern Switzerland (PH FHNW), introduced a mandatory pre-service teacher Computer Science Education course, to satisfy this mandate. All the PH FHNW students who study to become elementary school teachers must pass this two-semester course. The first part of this course was taught for the first time in fall of 2017. This paper presents the philosophy of this course and an initial analysis of both qualitative data capturing the students’ perceptions of Computational Thinking and quantitative data describing shifts in students’ skills and attitudes as effect sizes. The data suggest that it is possible to teach a basic understanding of programming to non-self-selected pre-service elementary school teachers.

Teaching how to teach computational thinking

This study, by critically analyzing material from multiple sources, aims to provide an overview of what is available on evaluation tools for educational apps for children. To realize this objective, a systematic literature review was conducted to search all English literature published after January 2010 in multiple electronic databases and internet sources. Various combinations of search strings were used due to database construction differences, while the results were cross-referenced to discard repeated references, obtaining those that met the criteria for inclusion.,The present study was conducted according to the methods provided by Khan et al. (2003) and Thome et al. (2016). The whole procedure included four stages: planning the review, identifying relevant studies in the literature, critical analysis of the literature, summarizing and interpreting the findings (Figure 1). Furthermore, in this analysis, a well-known checklist, PRISMA, was also used as a recommendation (Moher et al., 2015).,These review results reveal that, although there are several evaluation tools, in their majority they are not considered adequate to help teachers and parents to evaluate the pedagogical affordances of educational apps correctly and easily. Indeed, most of these tools are considered outdated. With the emergence of new issues such as General Data Protection Regulation, the quality criteria and methods for assessing children's products need to be continuously updated and adapted (Stoyanov et al., 2015). Some of these tools might be considered as good beginnings, but their “limited dimensions make generalizable considerations about the worth of apps” (Cherner, Dix and Lee, 2014, p. 179). Thus, there is a strong need for effective evaluation tools to help parents and teachers when choosing educational apps (Callaghan and Reich, 2018).,Even though this work is performed by following the systematic mapping guideline, threats to the validity of the results presented still exist. Although custom strings that contained a rich collection of data were used to search for papers, potentially relevant publications that would have been missed by the advanced search might exist. It is recommended that at least two different reviewers should independently review titles, abstracts and later full papers for exclusion (Thome et al., 2016). In this study, only one reviewer – the author – selected the papers and did the review. In the case of a single researcher, Kitchenham (2004) recommends that the single reviewer should consider discussing included and excluded papers with an expert panel. The researcher, following this recommendation, discussed the inclusion and exclusion procedure with an expert panel of two professionals with research experience from the Department of (removed for blind review). To deal with publication bias, the researcher in conjunction with the expert panel used the search strategies identified by Kitchenham (2004) including: Grey literature, conference proceedings, communicating with experts working in the field for any unpublished literature.,The purpose of this study was not to advocate any evaluation tool. Instead, the study aims to make parents, educators and software developers aware of the various evaluation tools available and to focus on their strengths, weaknesses and credibility. This study also highlights the need for a standardized app evaluation (Green et al., 2014) via reliable tools, which will allow anyone interested to evaluate apps with relative ease (Lubniewski et al., 2018). Parents and educators need a reliable, fast and easy-to-use tool for the evaluation of educational apps that is more than a general guideline (Lee and Kim, 2015). A new generation of evaluation tools would also be used as a reference among the software developers, designers to create educational apps with real educational value.,The results of this study point to the necessity of creating new evaluation tools based on research, either in the form of rubrics or checklists to help educators and parents to choose apps with real educational value.,However, to date, no systematic review has been published summarizing the available app evaluation tools. This study, by critically analyzing material from multiple sources, aims to provide an overview of what is available on evaluation tools for educational apps for children.

Tools for evaluating educational apps for young children: a systematic review of the literature

Mobile technologies open up new ways of fostering reflection in teacher education. With the intention of tying reflection closer to the actions in the classroom, facilitating multimedia recordings, providing prompts for reflection and fostering discussions between pre-service teachers, experienced teachers and university mentors, we developed the “Metapholio” app and tested it in the context of teaching internships. This app supports pre-service teachers in collecting noteworthy moments in the classroom by providing functionalities for individual and collaborative note taking. Notes can be created in the form of written text, photography, audio recordings and video recordings. Each note can be commented on and discussed with invited peers, experienced teachers and university mentors, who can also record moments themselves. Furthermore, the app makes it possible to select notes and attach them to more general written or spoken reflections on teaching and learning. Theoretical frameworks and writing prompts that are part of the app serve as scaffolds for such reflections. Peers, teachers and mentors can be invited to join the conversation on reflections. With the help of this app, pre-service teachers can, moreover, create their own multimedia mobile portfolio, which acts as a hybrid space for professional development in teacher education.

Metapholio: A Mobile App for Supporting Collaborative Note Taking and Reflection in Teacher Education

This chapter provides an overview of educational mobile apps as well as different models of classification. It also sheds light on the complex mobile app ecosystem from four perspectives: the learner, the teacher, the developer and the distributor. It highlights the contradictions that arise from the different goals and expectations from each perspective. The chapter concludes with a brief discussion of the motivational aspects of games and their current role for educational mobile apps as well as the future development of apps.

Trotz intensiver theoretischer Diskussionen uber den Begriff Medienkompetenz liegen bis anhin kaum empirisch validierte Messinstrumente zur empirischen Erfassung dieser Kompetenzen bei Kindern und Jugendlichen vor. Die bestehenden Angebote lassen sich in drei Typen gliedern: 1) Kommerzielle Prufungen im Kontext von Weiterbildungsangeboten, 2) wissenschaftliche Tests im Kontext empirischer Studien sowie 3) spielerische Tests und Quizzes im Kontext von Sensibilisierungskampagnen. Ausgewahlte Angebote werden vorgestellt und in Bezug auf ihre Brauchbarkeit fur praktische Medienarbeit diskutiert. Als Erganzung und Erweiterung des bestehenden Angebots wird der schweizerische Medienprofis-Test vorgestellt. Dabei handelt es sich um einen spielerischen Test, der frei zuganglich und empirisch validiert ist. Der Test umfasst funf Themenbereiche: 1. Digitalisierung und Computerisierung, 2. Informationsfreiheit und Glaubwurdigkeit, 3. Sex, Gewalt und Jugendschutz, 4. Neue Geschaftsmodelle und Kommerz sowie 5. Personalisierung und Datenschutz. Die abgefragten Kompetenzen orientieren sich daruber hinaus am Modullehrplan «Medien & Informatik» des neuen deutschschweizerischen Lehrplans 21. Die von Experten validierten Items wurden anhand einer Stichprobe von Schulerinnen und Schulern der 3. bis 8. Klassen erprobt und mittels Raschmodell skaliert. Lehrpersonen konnen den Test im Klassenverband durchfuhren und erhalten dabei neben aggregierten Ergebnissen auch Empfehlungen fur passende Unterrichtsmaterialien. Der Medienprofis-Test ist ein erster Schritt, ein standardisiertes und validiertes Messinstrument zur Verfugung zu stellen und die Diskussion um die Auspragungen der Medienkompetenz mit empirisch Daten zu bereichern.

Medienkompetenz messen: Die Entwicklung des Medienprofis-Tests in der Schweiz

In den letzten Jahren ist Informatikunterricht in verschiedenen europäischen Ländern in die Lehrpläne aufgenommen worden und soll zunehmend bereits im Grundschulalter beginnen. Auch der im Jahr 2015 verabschiedete »Lehrplan 21« für die 21 deutschsprachigen Kantone der Schweiz sieht bereits ab der 5. Klasse der Primarschule ein eigenes Zeitgefäß für »Medien und Informatik« vor. Diese Entwicklung stellt die Lehrerinnenund Lehrerbildung vor große Herausforderungen. Die pädagogische Hochschule Schwyz (PHSZ) hat als erste Lehrerbildungsstätte in der deutschsprachigen Schweiz den Studiengang Primarschule entsprechend angepasst und erteilt künftig eine Lehrbefähigung »Medien und Informatik«. Im Herbstsemester 2016 wurde eine obligatorische Informatik-Lehrveranstaltung für alle Studierenden des Studiengangs Primarstufe durchgeführt. Bei der Eingangsbefragung (n=85) bestätigte sich die Hypothese, dass angehende Primarlehrpersonen weder über eine Vorstellung des Themas Informatik noch über das notwendige Fachwissen verfügen. Der Beitrag schildert die Entstehungsgeschichte des Fachs »Medien und Informatik« im Lehrplan 21 in der Schweiz und diskutiert exemplarisch anhand der Lehrveranstaltung die Herausforderungen einer Informatikdidaktik für Primarlehrpersonen.
