Journal ArticleDOI
New Delhi Metallo-β-Lactamase-Producing Carbapenem-Resistant Escherichia coli Associated With Exposure to Duodenoscopes
Lauren Epstein,Jennifer C. Hunter,M. Allison Arwady,M. Allison Arwady,Victoria Tsai,Linda Stein,Marguerite Gribogiannis,Mabel Frias,Alice Guh,Alison S. Laufer,Stephanie R. Black,Massimo Pacilli,Heather Moulton-Meissner,J. Kamile Rasheed,Johannetsy J. Avillan,Brandon Kitchel,Brandi Limbago,Duncan MacCannell,David Lonsway,Judith Noble-Wang,Judith Conway,Craig Conover,Michael O. Vernon,Alexander J. Kallen +23 more
TL;DR: Exposure to duodenoscopes with bacterial contamination was associated with apparent transmission of NDM-producing E coli among patients at 1 hospital and facilities should be aware of the potential for transmission of bacteria including antimicrobial-resistant organisms via this route.
Journal ArticleDOI
Chlorhexidine Gluconate to Cleanse Patients in a Medical Intensive Care Unit: The Effectiveness of Source Control to Reduce the Bioburden of Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococci
Michael O. Vernon,Mary K. Hayden,William E. Trick,Robert Hayes,Donald Blom,Robert A. Weinstein +5 more
TL;DR: Cleansing patients with chlorhexidine-saturated cloths is a simple, effective strategy to reduce VRE contamination of patients' skin, the environment, and health care workers' hands and to decrease patient acquisition of VRE.
Journal ArticleDOI
Impact of Ring Wearing on Hand Contamination and Comparison of Hand Hygiene Agents in a Hospital
William E. Trick,Michael O. Vernon,Robert Hayes,Catherine Nathan,Thomas W. Rice,Brian J. Peterson,John Segreti,Sharon F. Welbel,Steven L. Solomon,Robert A. Weinstein +9 more
TL;DR: Ring wearing was associated with 10-fold higher median skin organism counts; contamination with Staphylococcus aureus, gram-negative bacilli, or Candida species; and a stepwise increased risk of contamination with any transient organism as the number of rings worn increased.
Journal ArticleDOI
Computer algorithms to detect bloodstream infections.
William E. Trick,Brandon M. Zagorski,Jerome I. Tokars,Michael O. Vernon,Sharon F. Welbel,Mary F. Wisniewski,Chesley L. Richards,Robert A. Weinstein +7 more
TL;DR: Automated bloodstream infection surveillance using electronic data is an accurate alternative to surveillance using manually collected data and should be considered as a viable alternative to manual surveillance.
Journal ArticleDOI
Multicenter intervention program to increase adherence to hand hygiene recommendations and glove use and to reduce the incidence of antimicrobial resistance.
William E. Trick,Michael O. Vernon,Sharon F. Welbel,Patricia DeMarais,Mary K. Hayden,Robert A. Weinstein +5 more
TL;DR: A multimodal intervention program increased adherence to hand hygiene recommendations, especially to the use of alcohol-based hand rubs during a 3-year period, and a concomitant reduction was found in the incidence of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria among isolates from clinical cultures.
