An integrated airway adapter capable of monitoring any combination of respiratory flow, O2 concentration, and concentrations of one or more of CO2, N2O, and an anesthetic agent in real time, breath by breath. Respiratory flow may be monitored with differential pressure flow meters under diverse inlet conditions through improved sensor configurations which minimize phase lag and dead space within the airway. Molecular oxygen concentration may be monitored by way of luminescence quenching techniques. Infrared absorption techniques may be used to monitor one or more of CO2N2O, and anesthetic agents.

A fluid flow speed measuring apparatus comprising a first pipe having an opening exposed into a fluid to be measured, a direction of the opening having an angle larger than a critical negative pressure angle, a second pipe having an opening exposed into the fluid to be measured, a direction of the opening of the second pipe having an angle larger than the critical negative pressure angle and at least one of conditions such as a diameter, a direction, and the number of the openings for determining a magnitude of the negative pressure being different from that of the opening of the first pipe, negative pressure difference detector for detecting a difference between negative pressures acting on the openings of the first and second pipes, and device for calculating a flow speed of the fluid to be measured on the basis of an output from the negative pressure difference detector.

Fluid flow speed measuring apparatus

Flow sensor assemblies having increased flow range capabilities are disclosed. In one illustrative embodiment, a flow sensor assembly includes a housing with an inlet flow port, an outlet flow port, a fluid channel extending between the inlet flow port and the outlet flow port, and a bypass channel having a pair of taps fluidly connected to the fluid channel at separate locations. A flow sensor for sensing a measure related to a flow rate of a fluid flowing through the fluid channel can positioned in the bypass channel. A pressure differential between the two taps of the bypass channel can drive a fraction of a fluid flowing through the fluid channel through the bypass channel. The flow sensor assembly may be configured to achieve, control, and/or balance a desired fraction of fluid flow through the bypass channel and past the flow sensor.

A flow-sensing pitot tube is disclosed for mounting in a conduit for indicating the rate of fluid flowing in the conduit. The tube has forward openings facing up-stream for sensing dynamic pressure, and multiple static pressure sensing openings, including a pair disposed at an angle of 110 degrees rearwardly of the forward openings, for sensing static pressure. Pressures sensed by the forward and rear openings are used to indicate volumetric flow by using a flow coefficient that is substantially independent of the Reynolds Number of the fluid.
