This invention involves a gear transmission mechanism and its device which incorporate double cycloidal equidistant conjugated gear mechanisms and devices, featuring in that a whole branch cyclic cycloidal equidistant curve at a side of the center of curvature of that cycloid is applied with the value of equidistance equal to or smaller than the radius of the rolling circle as the original tooth profile and thus conjugated mutually enveloping cycloidal equidistant curved gear mechanisms with one-tooth-difference, zero-tooth-difference or multi-tooth-difference can be made according to the requirement. Motor pumps and reducers made according to these mechanisms have the advantages of smaller sliding coefficient, smaller pressure angle, greater speed ratio range, lower noise, better strength, higher efficiency, more convenience in machining and lower cost. Therefore these mechanisms can be used to effectively replace the cycloidal lantern gearing with promising development of novel gear transmissions.

An electric motor including an integral ferrofluid bearing provides significant reduction in non-repeatable runout, stray flux, and audible noise over conventional motors using ball bearings. The motor includes a hub and a base, with the base attached to a tapered magnetically permeable shaft which defines an inner bearing race, and the hub attached to an internally tapered, magnetically permeable sleeve which defines an outer bearing race. Permanent magnets surround and are rotatable with the sleeve to provide mangetic fields which interact with the stator winding to cause rotation of the hub and sleeve. In addition, the permanent magnets form magnetic flux paths with the shaft and the sleeve to maintain ferrofluid lubricant between the inner and outer bearing races.

A self-contained factory-assembled and sealed air-conditioning unit is arranged for inconspicuous floor-mounted installation at the rear of the passenger compartment of a compact car, forwardly of the firewall ahead of a rear engine. The usual separate conditioned-air circulation path is provided at the top of the relatively small unit, in sealed relation to lower coolant-air paths running between laterally spaced bottom openings which communicate with corresponding floorboard openings for intake and discharge of ambient coolant air. Major power requirements, for the compressor and for a fan associated with the coolant-air path, are efficiently satisfied by a single universal-jointed mechanical coupling with an auxiliary power shaft extending forwardly from a pulley-driven relationship with the rear engine. Auxiliary ducting, body openings, separate sources of power for the compressor and fan, separate installations of system components, and disturbance of sealed refrigerant lines, are all advantageously avoided.

A number of data storage cassettes are held in a removeable magazine that forms part of a tape drive by which the magnetic tapes are recorded or played. The magazine holds two parallel vertically-displaced decks of cassettes that are moved under positive driving force along a rectangular pathway formed by the two decks. From a pick-up position in the magazine, a cassette is automatically extracted by a robotic arm and placed in the tape platform for reading or writing by a conventional tape drive mechanism. When the use of the cassette is finished and it is ejected by the tape drive, a sensor activates the robotic arm to return the cassette to the pick-up position. Each deck has one unoccupied cassette space. If during the sequence of operations, the cassettes on the lower deck are moved by the width of one cassette in one direction, the cassettes on the upper deck are moved the same distance in the opposite direction. This movement results in a vacant position at the end of the upper deck farthest away from the pick-up position. The cassette in the pick-up position is either removed and loaded into the tape deck or the cycle is continued. Movement of the cassette is produced by reciprocating drivers along the sides of the magazines. The cassettes are moved in only one direction by the reciprocating drivers and are locked to prevent movement in the opposite direction. Motions of the cassette handling mechanisms are limited by mechanical stops that trigger an electronic circuit to interrupt the driving power eliminating the need for sensitive position switches. Slip clutches prevent mechanical damage from the mechanical stops. The removable magazine does not include any electric motor drives and is automatically disengaged from the cassette driving mechanism by its removal, thus permitting economical use of multiple magazines.

An orbital drive for delivering high torque at low speed ratios comprises two pairs of meshed gears, each pair including an inner externally-toothed gear and an outer internally-toothed orbiting gear arranged to orbit in an eccentric path around its mate. One of the inner gears is stationary and the other is mounted on an output shaft. The orbiting gears are connected to orbit together around the output shaft axis, and may be formed in a common blank. A rotatable ring, concentric with the output axis, has eccentric driving relation with the orbiting gears. This driving relation may be established by peripheral engagement of these gears in an opening in the ring eccentric to the output axis. The ring member may serve as an input drive to produce orbital motion of the orbiting gears and thereby drive the output shaft, and may be driven mechanically, hydraulically, or electrically. The orbital drive may also serve as an hydraulic or pneumatic motor, pump, or brake, in which the mating gear teeth form expansible chambers to which working fluid is commutatively directed by ports formed in the ring member. Two or more of these orbital drives may be coupled to a common output shaft and a common input drive to provide added torque transmission capability; their respective orbiting gears are preferably phased apart equiangularly to relieve the output shaft of bending loads.

A Positive Fluid Displacement Device (PFDD) with single piece double-ended pistons connected to a crankpin for circular motion. Pistons are nested together to maintain all pistons in the same plane perpendicular to the axis of the crankshaft. Cylinders are driven in a reciprocating fashion by the pistons and are held loosely in a cylinder carriage along its axis with radial sealing engagement therebetween. Pliable members mount port plates within a housing such that there is no direct contact therebetween or with a two-layer manifold. A flat surface of the port plate is urged against the cylinder head by a pliable member which exerts a force on the center of the port plate. Grooves in the first layer of the manifold are sealed by the second layer to form fluid passageways. The cylinder head is guided in housing grooves with a pliable member. A sealing lip is integral with a piston head.
