A handheld electronic device with a reduced QWERTY keyboard and disambiguation software. The device outputs a default output and a number of variants. The output is based largely upon the likelihood that a user intended a particular output, but various features of the device provide additional variants provided by various logic structures resident on the device. The device enables editing during text entry and also provides a learning function that allows the disambiguation function to adapt to provide a customized experience for the user. The disambiguation function can be selectively disabled and an alternate keystroke interpretation system provided. Additionally, the device can facilitate the selection of variants by displaying a graphic of a special key of the keypad that enables a user to progressively select variants generally without changing the position of the user's hands on the device.

One or more sequences of characters in the word are checked to determine a probability that the word is valid. A prefix removal process removes any prefixes from a word, and obtains information about the removed prefix. A suffix removal process removes any suffixes from the word, and obtains information about the removed suffix. A root process obtains information about a root word from the dictionary database. A combination process then determines if the prefix, the root, and the suffix can be combined into a valid word as defined by one or more combination rules, obtains one or more of the possible parts of speech of the valid word, and stores the parts of speech with the valid word in the dictionary database.

A word pattern recognition system improves text input entered via a shorthand-on-keyboard interface. A core lexicon comprises commonly used words in a language; an extended lexicon comprises words not included in the core lexicon. The system only directly outputs words from the core lexicon. Candidate words from the extended lexicon can be outputted and simultaneously admitted to the core lexicon upon user selection. A concatenation module enables a user to input parts of a long word separately. A compound word module combines two common shorter words whose concatenation forms a long word.

System and method for improving text input in a shorthand-on-keyboard interface

An uninterrupted power supply (“UPS”) system is disclosed which uses a battery communication system to communicate to a UPS processor information concerning the status of a battery pack in an array of parallel coupled battery packs. The battery packs provide back-up power for the UPS system. Information about the battery packs is collected by a monitor associated with each of the battery packs. The monitors measure battery pack voltage, currents and temperature and compile information about the battery pack from the measured values. Each monitor prepares a data word representing information about its battery pack. The data words are transmitted to the UPS in response to commands issued by the UPS processor to the monitors.
