Literature Review of Data Mining Applications in Academic Libraries

The abundance of information technology and electronic resources for academic materials has contributed to the attention given to research on plagiarism from various perspectives. Among the issues that have attracted researchers’ attention are perceptions of plagiarism and attitudes toward plagiarism. This article presents a critical review of studies that have been conducted to examine staff’s and students’ perceptions of and attitudes toward plagiarism. It also presents a review of studies that have focused on factors contributing to plagiarism. Our review of studies reveals that most of the studies on perceptions of plagiarism and attitudes toward plagiarism lack an in-depth analysis of the relationship between the perceptions of plagiarism and other contextual, sociocultural and institutional variables, or the relationship between attitudes toward plagiarism and students’ perceptions of various forms of plagiarism. Although our review shows that various factors can contribute to plagiarism, there is no taxonomy that can account for all these factors. Some suggestions for future research are provided in this review article.

Perceptions of and Attitudes toward Plagiarism and Factors Contributing to Plagiarism: A Review of Studies.

We present findings of a literature review on the topic of educational integrity in the Canadian context. Our search revealed 56 sources, published between 1992 and 2017. A historical overview showed a rise in the number of scholarly publications in recent years, but with an overall limited number of research contributions. We identified three major themes in the literature: (a) empirical research; (b) prevention and professional development; and (c) other (scholarly essay). Our analysis showed little evidence of sustained research programs in Canada over time or national funding to support integrity-related inquiry. We also found that graduate students who completed their theses on topics related to educational integrity often have not published further work in the field later in their careers. We provide five concrete recommendations to elevate and accelerate the research agenda on educational integrity in Canada on a national level. We conclude with a call to action for increased research to better understand the particular characteristics of educational integrity in Canada.

2016 Top trends in academic libraries: A review of the trends and issues affecting academic libraries in higher education

Issues of academic integrity, specifically knowledge of, perceptions and attitudes toward plagiarism, are well documented in post-secondary settings using case studies for specific courses, recording discourse with focus groups, analyzing cross-cultural education philosophies, and reviewing the current literature. In this paper, the authors examine the perceptions of graduate students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines at the University of Florida regarding misconduct and integrity issues. Results revealed students’ perceptions of the definition and seriousness of potential academic misconduct, knowledge of institutional procedures, and views on faculty actions, all with a focus on divergences between US and internationally-educated students. The open-ended questions provide anecdotal evidence to highlight personal experiences, positive and negative, aimed at the faculty, international students and undergraduates. Combined, these findings outline an important part of the campus academic integrity culture at a major American university. Recommendations for local actions also are discussed.

Perceptions of Plagiarism by STEM Graduate Students: A Case Study

Background: The National Science Foundation (NSF), to meet the intent of the America COMPETES Act, have established a new requirement for responsible conduct of research (RCR) training for all undergraduate students, graduate students, and post-doctoral personnel engaged in the conduct of research. The Association of American Universities (AAU) has recommended five hours in the first year of a person’s research career and three years annually thereafter or as required by a specific funding agency, whichever is larger. Michigan State University (MSU) endorsed this time standard in its implementation of RCR training. Provost Wilcox and Vice President Gray have charged the various units on campus to establish plans [1]. The College of Engineering has elected to develop a college-wide plan. It is expected that all or nearly all Federal funding agencies will eventually require RCR training as a condition of the grant/contract. Hence, we can expect that RCR training will be required for all undergraduate students, graduate students, and post-doctoral personnel involved in the research enterprise.
