Mobile payments (m-payments) are increasingly being adopted by organisations as a new way of doing business in the 21 st century. During the last few years, the use of m-payments as a new payment channel has resulted in an increase in the volume of literature dedicated to the topic. For this reason, this paper presents the findings of a review of literature aimed at identifying the key research themes and methodologies researched. In order to uncover these trends the authors reviewed the top twenty cited papers since 1999 and the twenty most recently published papers on m-payments since August 2014.

Trends in mobile payments research: A literature review

Near Field Communication (NFC) is an emerging short-range wireless communication technology that offers great and varied promise in services such as payment, ticketing, gaming, crowd sourcing, voting, navigation, and many others. NFC technology enables the integration of services from a wide range of applications into one single smartphone. NFC technology has emerged recently, and consequently not much academic data are available yet, although the number of academic research studies carried out in the past two years has already surpassed the total number of the prior works combined. This paper presents the concept of NFC technology in a holistic approach from different perspectives, including hardware improvement and optimization, communication essentials and standards, applications, secure elements, privacy and security, usability analysis, and ecosystem and business issues. Further research opportunities in terms of the academic and business points of view are also explored and discussed at the end of each section. This comprehensive survey will be a valuable guide for researchers and academicians, as well as for business in the NFC technology and ecosystem.

The Survey on Near Field Communication

Indoor navigation systems have recently become a popular research field due to the lack of GPS signals indoors. Several indoors navigation systems have already been proposed in order to eliminate deficiencies; however each of them has several technical and usability limitations. In this study, we propose NFC Internal, a Near Field Communication (NFC)-based indoor navigation system, which enables users to navigate through a building or a complex by enabling a simple location update, simply by touching NFC tags those are spread around and orient users to the destination. In this paper, we initially present the system requirements, give the design details and study the viability of NFC Internal with a prototype application and a case study. Moreover, we evaluate the performance of the system and compare it with existing indoor navigation systems. It is seen that NFC Internal has considerable advantages and significant contributions to existing indoor navigation systems in terms of security and privacy, cost, performance, robustness, complexity, user preference and commercial availability.

NFC Internal: An Indoor Navigation System

‘Internet of things’ (IoT) realize a network of millions of connected devices like sensors, actuators and transceivers. Being a composite system, IoT must deal with the associated problems while meeting throughput, latency, energy consumption, and security criteria. In this work, wireless technologies have been classified based on the mechanisms of physical layer, media access control layer, and network layer. The fundamentals of wireless communication and all the non-trivial interests associated with these three layers are summarized with respect to the criteria imposed by IoT. Various security threats at these layers and vulnerabilities of the standards against such attacks have also been listed out. To mitigate these problems, instead of relying on any one particular solution, more emphasis is given on the integrated approach where layer-wise solutions are provided. Thereafter, a brief analysis of the available wireless communication standards and their salient features are discussed. Research scope and challenges in IoT applications ranging from low power, low data rate, short range to extended coverage are identified, followed by possible directions to be taken. Additionally, the third generation partnership project for low-power wide area solutions to meet the IoT requirements are analyzed in detail.

Communication technologies and security challenges for internet of things: A comprehensive review

Informing near field communication (NFC) payment readers of NFC target device payment application availability. A payment application executing under a host operating system of an NFC target device formats a SELECT proximity payment system environment (PPSE) RESPONSE as one or more NFC Application Protocol Data Units (APDUs). The SELECT PPSE RESPONSE is formatted to respond to a SELECT PPSE command from an NFC payment reader. The SELECT PPSE RESPONSE includes a list of one or more Application Identifiers (AIDs) corresponding to one or more payment options available on the NFC target device. The payment application communicates the formatted SELECT PPSE RESPONSE to a PPSE applet executing on the NFC target device. The PPSE applet receives a SELECT PPSE command from an NFC payment reader. The PPSE applet communicates the SELECT PPSE RESPONSE to the NFC payment reader, in response to receiving the SELECT PPSE command from the NFC payment reader.

Host-Formatted Select Proximity Payment System Environment Response

Mobile payments still remain essentially an emerging technology, seeking to fill the gap between the envisioned potential and widespread usage. In this paper, we present an integrated mobile service solution based on the near field communication (NFC) protocol that was developed under a research project called MobiPag. The most distinctive characteristic of Mobipag is its open architectural model that allows multiple partners to become part of the payment value-chain and create solutions that complement payments in many unexpected ways. We describe the Mobipag architecture and how it has been used to support a mobile payment trial. We identify a set of design lessons resulting from usage experiences associated with real-world payment situations with NFC-enabled mobile phones. Based on results from this trial, we identify a number of challenges and guidelines that may help to shape future versions of NFC-based payment systems. In particular, we highlight key challenges for the initial phases of payment deployments, where it is essential to focus on scenarios that can be identified as more feasible for early adoption. We also have identified a fundamental trade-off between the flexibility supported by the Mobipag solution and the respective implications for the payment process, particularly on the users' mental model.

MobiPag: integrated mobile payment, ticketing and couponing solution based on NFC.

The emergence of Near Field Communication technology added more functionality to mobile phones. People can now access to new mobile services such as payment, ticketing, couponing, and control access to cars, homes and hotels. Although these services seem to complement each other, most studies have focused on the development and evaluation of each mobile service individually. In this paper, we propose an integrated mobile service solution – payment, ticketing and couponing – based on NFC. This solution was evaluated in a two-phase user study, which was run in real environment. Participants have largely appreciated the integration of tickets and discount coupons on the payment process. However, despite the integration of services being one of the strongest points of the solution, it also revealed to be one of the main challenges that any payment systems may have to address. Findings suggest that adding additional services to a solution may become very complex from a cognitive perspective.

Evaluation of an Integrated Mobile Payment, Ticketing and Couponing Solution Based on NFC.

In the 2005 Portuguese Parliament General Elections there were non-valid experiments of e-voting at five voting places and also through the Internet. Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto audited such experiments. Relevant security, transparency, usability and accessibility evaluation criteria and sub-criteria were defined, and an auditing procedure based on AHP was established. This paper shortly presents the methodology used, the four e-voting systems and the main results of the overall experiment. The systems could be used successfully and were extremely popular with voters. However, more information to the citizens and to the officials involved in the e-voting process would be required for a valid election. The systems also need to be improved, for instance, to make sure that the number of votes electronically cast is the same as the number of voters that were validated and actually registered to vote at any particular site on the Election Day.
