The current investigation is aimed to simulate the complex internal flow in a centrifugal pump impeller with six twisted blades by using a three-dimensional Navier-Stokes code with a standard k-&#x03B5; two-equation turbulence model. Different flow rates were specified at inlet boundary to predict the characteristics of the pump. A detailed analysis of the results at design load, Qdesign, and off-design conditions, Q = 0.43 Qdesign and Q = 1.45 Qdesign, is presented. From the numerical simulation, it shows that the impeller passage flow at design point is quite smooth and follows the curvature of the blade. However, flow separation is observed at the leading edge due to nontangential inflow condition. The flow pattern changed significantly inside the volute as well, with double vortical flow structures formed at cutwater and slowly evolved into a single vortical structure at the volute diffuser. For the pressure distribution, the pressure increases gradually along streamwise direction in the impeller passages. When the centrifugal pump is operating under off-design flow rate condition, unsteady flow developed in the impeller passage and the volute casing.

Numerical Flow Simulation in a Centrifugal Pump at Design and Off-Design Conditions

A 3D-CFD simulation of the impeller and volute of a centrifugal pump has been performed using CFX codes. The pump has a specific speed of 32 (metric units) and an outside impeller diameter of 400 mm. First, a 3D flow simulation for the impeller with a structured grid is presented. A sensitivity analysis regarding grid quality and turbulence models were also performed. The final impeller model obtained was used for a 3D quasi-unsteady flow simulation of the impeller-volute stage. A procedure for designing the volute, the nonstructured grid generation in the volute, and the interface flow passage between the impeller and volute are discussed. This flow simulation was carried out for several impeller blades and volute tongue relative positions. As a result, velocity and pressure field were calculated for different flow rates, allowing to obtain the radial thrust on the pump shaft.

Numerical Modelization of the Flow in Centrifugal Pump: Volute Influence in Velocity and Pressure Fields

Potential of flow pre-whirl at the compressor inlet of automotive engine turbochargers to enlarge surge margin and overcome packaging limitations

The asymmetric influence of the volute on the flow in a transonic, high-pressure ratio centrifugal compressor at off-design conditions was investigated. Fully three-dimensional vis- cous steady-state computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was applied to simulate the flow in a 4.2:1 design pressure ratio compressor for automotive application. Computed performance charac- teristics are presented for low- and high-pressure ratio operating conditions, with and without an overhung volute. The volute was found to severely harm aerodynamic stability of the investi- gated compressor when operating at lower than design mass flow. The relative narrowing effect of the volute on compressor map width increases with pressure ratio up to a 42 per cent drop in stable flow range at design speed. The inter-passage variations in performance quantities and the influence of the volute tongue region are discussed in detail. The circumferential variations of incidence angle correlate with rotational speed, which, in combination with the higher sensitivity to incidence angle at transonic inflow conditions, seems to deteriorates stability when transonic inflow conditions are reached.

Influence of the volute on the flow in a centrifugal compressor of a high-pressure ratio turbocharger

The performance of centrifugal compressors can be seriously degraded by inlet flow distortions that result from an unsatisfactory inlet configuration. In this present work, the flow is numerically simulated and the flow details are analyzed and discussed in order to understand the performance behavior of the compressor exposed to different inlet configurations. In a previous work, complementary to this present work, experimental tests were carried out for the comparison of a centrifugal compressor stage performance with two different inlet configurations: one of which was a straight pipe with constant cross-sectional area and the other a 90-deg curved pipe with nozzle shape. Steady-state compressor stage simulation including the impeller and diffuser with three different inlets has been carried out to investigate the influence of each inlet type on the compressor performance. The three different inlet systems included a proposed and improved inlet model. The flow from the bend inlet is not axisymmetric in the circumferential and radial distortion, thus the diffuser and the impeller are modeled with fully 360-deg passages

The Inlet Flow Structure of a Centrifugal Compressor Stage and Its Influence on the Compressor Performance

A numerical simulation is performed on a single-stage centrifugal compressor using the commercially available CFD software, CFX-TASCflow. The steady flow is obtained by circumferentially averaging the exit fluxes of the impeller. Three runs are made at the design condition and off-design conditions. The predicted performance is in agreement with experimental data. The flow details inside the stationary components are investigated, resulting in a flow model describing the volute/diffuser interaction at design and off-design conditions

A Numerical Investigation on the Volute/Diffuser Interaction Due to the Axial Distortion at the Impeller Exit

The interaction between an impeller with one large and one small overhung volute was investigated by both computational fluid dynamics simulation and experimental methods. The large volute was mainly generated by increasing the small volute axial length. The computational model, with k—∊ turbulence model and wall function, has been used to predict the internal flow of both volutes. The effect of volute tongue on the flow in the impeller was analysed at off-design conditions. The flow structure in the volutes was also investigated in detail.The performance test of the two configurations was carried out in the aero test facility at Solar Turbines Inc. A good agreement between experimental data and numerical simulation results was found on both the whole compressor stage performance and the impeller performance. The largest deviation is close to 10 per cent for the compressor stage performance prediction at high mass flowrate only.
