Although the title of this book includes the word “introduction”, the treatment of the subject is extensive and complete. The material goes well beyond the coverage of bolted joint design received in a typical undergraduate machine design course. The easy-to-read text begins with the fundamentals of bolt strength, deformation, and material selection and proceeds to cover the topics of preload, torque, and stretch control. The emphasis is on practical considerations for the efficient design of joints, including cost, ease of assembly, inspection, and disassembly. This second, revised edition has expanded the coverage of corrosion, fatigue, gaskets, and ultrasonic measurement of bolt strain. Also included are discussions of the failure modes and mechanisms of bolted joints. Case histories from industry are presented throughout the text to illustrate key points. Many up-to-date references are presented at the end of each chapter to allow the reader to pursue individual topics further, if desired. The text contains several appendices with useful tables and formulas for quick reference. The author has broad experience in the subject area from many years as a consultant to the power generation and nuclear industry, active participation on society working groups such as ASME and PVRC, as well as the presentation of numerous seminars on the topic. This book would serve as a valuable desk reference for engineers concerned with the design and performance of bolted joints.

Failure prediction, monitoring and diagnosis methods for slewing bearings of large-scale wind turbine: A review

There have been extensive studies on vibration based condition monitoring, prognosis of rotating element bearings; and reviews of the methods on how to identify bearing fault and predict the final failure reported widely in literature. The investigated bearings commonly discussed in the literatures were run in moderate and high rotating speed, and damages were artificially introduced e.g. with artificial crack or seeded defect. This paper deals with very low rotational-speed slewing bearing (1–4.5 rpm) without artificial fault. Two real vibration data were utilized, namely data collected from lab slewing bearing subject to accelerated life test and from a sheet metal company. Empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) were applied in both lab slewing bearing data and real case data. Outer race fault (BPFO) and rolling element fault (BSF) frequencies of slewing bearing can be identified. However, these fault frequencies could not be identified using fast Fourier transform (FFT).

This paper presents a calculation of the general static load-carrying capacity of four-contact-point slewing bearings under axial, radial, and tilting-moment loads. This calculation is based on a generalization of Sjovall and Rumbarger’s equations and provides an acceptance surface in the load space. This acceptance surface provides a solid basis to compute acceptance curves for the design and selection of bearings of this kind.
