TL;DR: An optical scheme for a remote measurement of mode-coupling coefficients in birefringent fiber is proposed that uses wavelength scanning, white-light interferometry, and two phase-shifted channels for output spectrum detection.
Abstract: An optical scheme for a remote measurement of mode-coupling coefficients in birefringent fiber is proposed that uses wavelength scanning, white-light interferometry, and two phase-shifted channels for output spectrum detection. The procedure is outlined for two-channel signal processing. This technique can be used to develop distributed fiber-optic sensor for remote sensing. Its experimental verification is presented.

TL;DR: In this article, a method for measuring modal birefringence in optical fibers is described, which combines an interferometric technique with wavelength scanning and allows a high precision, nondestructive measurement of the bireFringence along different sections of a long optical fiber.
Abstract: This paper describes a method for measuring modal birefringence in optical fibers It combines an interferometric technique with wavelength scanning and allows a high precision, nondestructive measurement of the birefringence along different sections of a long optical fiber The experimental results for hi-bi fibers, 10-meters and 100-meters long, are presented An accuracy of about 01% is achieved in the spectral range of 600 - 850 nm
