This research develops a nonlocal couple stress theory to investigate static stability and free vibration characteristics of functionally graded (FG) nanobeams. The theory introduces two parameters based on nonlocal elasticity theory and modified couple stress theory to capture the size effects much accurately. Therefore, a nonlocal stress field parameter and a material length scale parameter are used to involve both stiffness-softening and stiffness-hardening effects on responses of FG nanobeams. The FG nanobeam is modeled via a higher order refined beam theory in which shear deformation effect is verified needless of shear correction factor. A power-law distribution is used to describe the graded material properties. The governing equations and the related boundary conditions are derived by Hamilton’s principle and they are solved applying Chebyshev–Ritz method which satisfies various boundary conditions. A comparison study is performed to verify the present formulation with the provided data in the literature and a good agreement is observed. The parametric study covered in this paper includes several parameters such as nonlocal and length scale parameters, power-law exponent, slenderness ratio, shear deformation and various boundary conditions on natural frequencies and buckling loads of FG nanobeams in detail.

Application of Chebyshev–Ritz method for static stability and vibration analysis of nonlocal microstructure-dependent nanostructures

Due to rapid development of process manufacturing, composite materials with porosity have attracted commercial attention in promoting engineering applications. For this regard, in this research wave propagation-thermal characteristics of a size-dependent graphene nanoplatelet-reinforced composite (GNPRC) porous cylindrical nanoshell in thermal environment are investigated. The effects of small scale are analyzed based on nonlocal strain gradient theory (NSGT). The governing equations of the laminated composite cylindrical nanoshell in thermal environment have been evolved using Hamilton’s principle and solved with the assistance of the analytical method. For the first time, wave propagation-thermal behavior of a GNPRC porous cylindrical nanoshell in thermal environment based on NSGT is examined. The results show that by increasing the thickness, the effect of porosity on the phase velocity decreases. Another important result is that by increasing the value of the radius, the difference between the minimum and maximum values of the phase velocity increases. Finally, influence of temperature change, wave number, angular velocity and different types of porosity distribution on phase velocity are investigated using the mentioned continuum mechanics theory. As a useful suggestion, for designing of a GPLRC nanostructure should be attention to the GNP weight function and radius, simultaneously.

On modeling of wave propagation in a thermally affected GNP-reinforced imperfect nanocomposite shell

Nonlinear free vibration of graded graphene reinforced cylindrical shells: Effects of spinning motion and axial load

In the present work the dynamic analysis of the functionally graded rectangular nanoplates is studied. The theory of nonlocal elasticity based on the quasi 3D high shear deformation theory (quasi 3D HSDT) has been employed to determine the natural frequencies of the nanosize FG plate. In HSDT a cubic function is employed in terms of thickness coordinate to introduce the influence of transverse shear deformation and stretching thickness. The theory of nonlocal elasticity is utilized to examine the impact of the small scale on the natural frequency of the FG rectangular nanoplate. The equations of motion are deduced by implementing Hamilton\'s principle. To demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed method, the calculated results in specific cases are compared and examined with available results in the literature and a good agreement is observed. Finally, the influence of the various parameters such as the nonlocal coefficient, the material indexes, the aspect ratio, and the thickness to length ratio on the dynamic properties of the FG nanoplates is illustrated and discussed in detail.

Dynamic analysis of nanosize FG rectangular plates based on simple nonlocal quasi 3D HSDT

Based on the first order shear deformation plate theory (FSDT) in the present studie, static and dynamic behavior of carbon nanotube-reinforced composite sandwich plates has been analysed. Two types of sandwich plates, namely, the sandwich with face sheet reinforced and homogeneous core and the sandwich with homogeneous face sheet and reinforced core are considered. The face sheet or core plates are reinforced by single-walled carbon nanotubes with two types of distributions of uniaxially aligned reinforcement material which uniformly (UD-CNT) and functionally graded (FG-CNT). The analytical equations are derived and the exact solutions for bending and vibration analyses of such type’s plates are obtained. The mathematical models provided and the present solutions are numerically validated by comparison with some available results in the literature. Inﬂuence of Various parameters of reinforced sandwich plates such as aspect ratios, volume fraction, types of reinforcement and plate thickness on the bending and vibration analyses of carbon nanotube-reinforced composite sandwich plates are studied and discussed. The findings suggest that the (FG-CNT) face sheet reinforced sandwich plate has a high resistance against deflections compared to other types of reinforcement. It is also revealed that the reduction in the dimensionless natural frequency is most pronounced in core reinforced sandwich plate.

Static and Dynamic Behavior of Nanotubes-Reinforced Sandwich Plates Using (FSDT)

This work presents the buckling investigation of embedded orthotropic nanoplates such as graphene by employing a new refined plate theory and nonlocal small-scale effects. The elastic foundation is modeled as two-parameter Pasternak foundation. The proposed two-variable refined plate theory takes account of transverse shear influences and parabolic variation of the transverse shear strains within the thickness of the plate by introducing undetermined integral terms, hence it is unnecessary to use shear correction factors. Nonlocal governing equations for the single layered graphene sheet are obtained from the principle of virtual displacements. The proposed theory is compared with other plate theories. Analytical solutions for buckling loads are obtained for single-layered graphene sheets with isotropic and orthotropic properties. The results presented in this study may provide useful guidance for design of orthotropic graphene based nanodevices that make use of the buckling properties of orthotropic nanoplates.
