The position encoder system requires no keyboard surface area and includes a retractable and extendable handle that is stored inside the computer when not in use. The handle is extended for use near the computer keyboard. The movement of the handle is sensed by a high resolution sensing system that consumes relatively little power.

An electronic caliper configuration making such calipers more reliable in the presence of liquid and particulate contaminants. Included in the caliper configuration is an elongated cavity added to the main beam of the caliper. The cavity is sealed with a cover. The measuring scale element of the measuring transducer, and the associated shorter pickoff element are mounted in this cavity. The depth bar, ordinarily attached to the sliding jaw in conventional calipers, is inserted into the cavity through a hole or holes aligned parallel to the longitudinal axis of the caliper and internally joined to the moving transducer element. A conventional lip seal provides an effective seal around the diameter of the depth bar. An external portion of the depth bar is coupled to the sliding jaw of the caliper via axially rigid linkage or alternately an axially rigid flexure. In this way, the internally isolated transducer elements can be actuated by the external sliding caliper jaw. As a result, the measuring transducer elements, which are contamination sensitive, may be isolated within a cavity in a caliper which nearly maintains the preferred, historically proven form and functions to provide an electronic caliper with greatly improved reliability when operating in the traditional industrial shop environment. In one embodiment, the neutral axis of the depth bar is positioned to coincide with the neutral axis of the linkage bars, so that bending of the linkage bars and depth bar does not significantly affect the measurement accuracy.

Sealed mechanical configuration for electronic calipers for reliable operation in contaminated environments

A capacitive sense array configured to improve edge accuracy in detecting a presence of a conductive object is described. In one embodiment, a capacitive sense array includes at least a first set of sense elements having non-homogenous pitches disposes in a first longitudinal axis of the capacitive sense array. The pitch includes width of the sense elements and spacing between the sense elements.

A measuring instrument comprises a column (10) on which is mounted a carriage (11) with a drive cursor (12) and a measuring cursor (20) sliding on the drive cursor (12) and carrying a measuring contact (24) and a measuring device (40). A measuring force device (25) is arranged between the two cursors and determines, thanks to a lever (26) a rest position and two measuring positions vertically upwardly or downwardly offset or corresponding to a predetermined measuring force on the member to be measured. A motor (15) displaces the drive cursor (12) and the position detector (36) permits measuring the relative position between the two cursors. A control unit (35) controls the speed and direction of rotation of the motor (15) as a function either of the signals (44) received from the position detector (36) or from two external contacts (42, 43). The carriage (11) is first displaced by means of the external contacts (42, 43) and as soon as the lag between the two cursors reaches an upper or lower limit, the control of the motor is effected as a function of the signals received from the position detector (36). There is thus obtained a double subjection of the speed of movement of the carriage and of the measuring force, permitting very precise and rapid measurements and rendering easy the measurement of profiles.

Instrument for measuring lengths or angles

A method for dynamic and non-contact measurement of the displacement of a conductive substance with respect to a capacitive sensor formed by two parallel conductive plates, superimposed, electrically insulated from one another, and fed by a high frequency signal having a predetermined voltage, the capacitive sensor being connected to a device for detecting a current value. Also disclosed is a method for dynamic and non-contact measurement of the permittivity of a dielectric substance between a conductive part and a capacitive sensor of the above-mentioned type.

Dynamic and non-contact measurement of displacement or of permittivity by use of a capacitive sensor

A capacitance-type measuring apparatus includes first and second support members which are movable with respect to one another along a measurement axis; a first electrode array and a second electrode disposed on the first support member; and a third electrode array disposed on the second support member and capacitively coupling the first electrode array and second electrode for transmission of a signal between the first electrode array and second electrode through the third electrode array. One of the first electrode array or the second electrode is formed to have end portions configured such that the degree of coupling between the first electrode array and second electrode through the third electrode array decreases linearly along the extent of each end portion relative to the measurement axis. This configuration permits improved measurement accuracies by reducing the effects of tilt between the first and second support members which changes the spacing between such members along the axis of measurement.
