Higher polyetherimide intrinsic viscosity is achieved if the alkali diphenoxide is employed as a preformed substantially anhydrous reaction product of a diphenoxide and a sodium alkoxide in a C(13) alkanol.

The invention relates to organic polymers which can be crosslinked under the action of light and which are suitable for carrying out photomechanical processes. These polymers are photochemically considerably more sensitive than known comparable polymers and their sensitivity can additionally also be further increased by means of a combination with sensitizers. ORGANOSILANES ARE PROVIDED HAVING AT LEAST ONE CHEMICALLY-COMBINES ALIPHATICALLY UNSATURATED IMIDO ORGANIC RADICAL, SUCH AS A MATEIMIDO-SUBSTITUTED ORGANOSILANE AND A METHOD FOR MAKING THESE MATERIALS. FOR EXAMPLE, REACTION CAN BE EFFECTED BETWEEN AN ALIPHATICALLY UNSATURATED DISCARBOXYLIC ACID ANHYDRIDE AND AN AMINOORGANOALKOXYSILANE. IN CERTAIN INSTANCES, AMIDO ACID PRECURSORS OF SUCH UNSATURATED IMIDO-SUBSTITUTED ORGANOSILANES ALSO CAN BE MADE. CURABLE ORGANOPOLYSILOXANE COMPOSITIONS ARE PROVIDED AND A METHOD FOR MAKING THEM, COMPRISING ORGANOPOLYSILOXANE HAVING ONE OR MORE ALIPHATICALLY UNSATURATED IMIDO ARGANO RADICALS ATTACHED TO SILICON THROUGH A CARBON-SILICON BOND. THE CURABLE ORGANOPOLYSILOXANE COMPOSITIONS CAN BE IN THE FORM OF BLENDS OF SUCH IMIDO-SUBSTITUTED ORGANOPOLYSILOXANE IN COMBINATION WITH AT LEAST ONE OLEFINICALLY UNSATURATED MONOMER, SUCH AS N-PHENYLMALEIMIDE, BISMALEIMIDE, SYTENE, ETC., OR AT LEAST ONE POLYMER, SUCH AS POLYCARBONATE, PPOLYVINYLCHLORIDE, ETC., OR MIXTURES THEREOF.
