Gas leaks can cause major incidents resulting in both human injuries and financial losses. To avoid such situations, a considerable amount of effort has been devoted to the development of reliable techniques for detecting gas leakage. As knowing about the existence of a leak is not always enough to launch a corrective action, some of the leak detection techniques were designed to allow the possibility of locating the leak. The main purpose of this paper is to identify the state-of-the-art in leak detection and localization methods. Additionally we evaluate the capabilities of these techniques in order to identify the advantages and disadvantages of using each leak detection solution.

A survey on gas leak detection and localization techniques

Pipelines are widely used for the transportation of hydrocarbon fluids over millions of miles all over the world. The structures of the pipelines are designed to withstand several environmental loading conditions to ensure safe and reliable distribution from point of production to the shore or distribution depot. However, leaks in pipeline networks are one of the major causes of innumerable losses in pipeline operators and nature. Incidents of pipeline failure can result in serious ecological disasters, human casualties and financial loss. In order to avoid such menace and maintain safe and reliable pipeline infrastructure, substantial research efforts have been devoted to implementing pipeline leak detection and localisation using different approaches. This paper discusses pipeline leakage detection technologies and summarises the state-of-the-art achievements. Different leakage detection and localisation in pipeline systems are reviewed and their strengths and weaknesses are highlighted. Comparative performance analysis is performed to provide a guide in determining which leak detection method is appropriate for particular operating settings. In addition, research gaps and open issues for development of reliable pipeline leakage detection systems are discussed.

Recent Advances in Pipeline Monitoring and Oil Leakage Detection Technologies: Principles and Approaches

The leak of gas pipelines can be detected and located by the acoustic method. The technologies of recognizing and extracting wave characteristics are summarized in details in this paper, which is to distinguish leaking and disturbing signals from time and frequency domain. A high-pressure and long distance leak test loop is designed and established by similarity analysis with field transmission pipelines. The acoustic signals collected by sensors are de-noised by wavelet transform to eliminate the background noises, and time-frequency analysis is used to analyze the characteristics of frequency domain. The conclusion can be drawn that most acoustic signals are concentrated on the ranges of 0–100 Hz. The acoustic signal recognition and extraction methods are verified and compared with others and it proves that the disturbing signals can be efficiently removed by the analysis of time and frequency domain, while the new characteristics of the accumulative value difference, mean value difference and peak value difference of signals in adjacent intervals can detect the leak effectively and decrease the false alarm rate significantly. The formula for leak location is modified with consideration of the influences of temperature and pressure. The positioning accuracy can be significantly improved with relative error between 0.01% and 1.37%.

Experimental study on leak detection and location for gas pipeline based on acoustic method

Exploring earth-abundant electrocatalysts with excellent activity, robust stability, and multiple functions is crucial for electrolytic hydrogen generation. Porous phosphorized CoNi2 S4 yolk-shell spheres (P-CoNi2 S4 YSSs) were rationally designed and synthesized by a combined hydrothermal sulfidation and gas-phase phosphorization strategy. Benefiting from the strengthened Ni3+ /Ni2+ couple, enhanced electronic conductivity, and hollow structure, the P-CoNi2 S4 YSSs exhibit excellent activity and durability towards hydrogen/oxygen evolution and urea oxidation reactions in alkaline solution, affording low potentials of -0.135 V, 1.512 V, and 1.306 V (versus reversible hydrogen electrode) at 10 mA cm-2 , respectively. Remarkably, when used as the anode and cathode simultaneously, the P-CoNi2 S4 catalyst merely requires a cell voltage of 1.544 V in water splitting and 1.402 V in urea electrolysis to attain 10 mA cm-2 with excellent durability for 100 h, outperforming most of the reported nickel-based sulfides and even noble-metal-based electrocatalysts. This work promotes the application of sulfides in electrochemical hydrogen production and provides a feasible approach for urea-rich wastewater treatment.

Phosphorized CoNi 2 S 4 Yolk-Shell Spheres for Highly Efficient Hydrogen Production via Water and Urea Electrolysis

The generation of leak along the pipeline carrying crude oils and liquid fuels results enormous financial loss to the industry and also affects the public health. Hence, the leak detection and localization problem has always been a major concern for the companies. In spite of the various techniques developed, accuracy and time involved in the prediction is still a matter of concern. In this paper, a novel leak detection scheme based on rough set theory and support vector machine (SVM) is proposed to overcome the problem of false leak detection. In this approach, 'rough set theory' is explored to reduce the length of experimental data as well as generate rules. It is embedded to enhance the decision making process. Further, SVM classifier is employed to inspect the cases that could not be detected by applied rules. For the computational training of SVM, this paper uses swarm intelligence technique: artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm, which imitates intelligent food searching behavior of honey bees. The results of proposed leak detection scheme with ABC are compared with those obtained by using particle swarm optimization (PSO) and one of its variants, so-called enhanced particle swarm optimization (EPSO). The experimental results advocate the use of propounded method for detecting leaks with maximum accuracy.

Leak detection of pipeline

A time–frequency technique for locating leaks in buried gas distribution pipes involves the use of the cross-correlation on two measured acoustic signals on either side of a leak. This technique can be problematic for locating leaks in steel pipes, as the acoustic signals in these pipes are generally narrow-band and low frequency. The effectiveness of the time–frequency technique for detecting leaks in steel pipes was investigated experimentally in an earlier study. The object of this paper is to identify the characteristics of this dispersive acoustic wave through analysis of the cut-off frequency by using the time–frequency method experimentally and BEM (boundary element method) theoretically for the development of an experimental tool to analyze the leak signals in steel pipe. The tool is based on experimental work and theoretical formulation of wave propagation in a fluid-filled pipe. This tool uses the time–frequency method to explain some of the features of wave propagation measurements made in gas pipes. Leak noise signals are generally passed through a time–frequency filter for detection of impulse signal related leakage.

An acoustic wave signal measured on the gas pipe due to impact force is transfer to the far distance through the medium inside of duct. This signal is very complex since it includes the acoustic wave and solid wave. Acoustic wave is affected by the cavity mode inside of duct. The analysis of this acoustic wave gives information about the impact force. For the analysis of this signal, the correlation technique has been used for a long time. This method has a limitation for the application since the waves have dispersive and cavity mode characteristics for the flexible wave. In this paper, we present the time-frequency method for the identification of impact force and the location of impact on the gas pipe. The results give the useful information for the impact force and are applied to the analysis of leakage location of the gas pipe.
