Synthesis of Conjugated Polymers for Organic Solar Cell Applications

A review was presented to demonstrate a historical description of the synthesis of light-emitting conjugated polymers for applications in electroluminescent devices. Electroluminescence (EL) was first reported in poly(para-phenylene vinylene) (PPV) in 1990 and researchers continued to make significant efforts to develop conjugated materials as the active units in light-emitting devices (LED) to be used in display applications. Conjugated oligomers were used as luminescent materials and as models for conjugated polymers in the review. Oligomers were used to demonstrate a structure and property relationship to determine a key polymer property or to demonstrate a technique that was to be applied to polymers. The review focused on demonstrating the way polymer structures were made and the way their properties were controlled by intelligent and rational and synthetic design.

Synthesis of Light-Emitting Conjugated Polymers for Applications in Electroluminescent Devices

A comprehensive review of the literature on electron transport materials (ETMs) used to enhance the performance of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) is presented. The structure−property−performance relationships of many classes of ETMs, both small-molecule- and polymer-based, that have been widely used to improve OLED performance through control of charge injection, transport, and recombination are highlighted. The molecular architecture, electronic structure (electron affinity and ionization potential), thin film processing, thermal stability, morphology, and electron mobility of diverse organic ETMs are discussed and related to their effectiveness in improving OLED performance (efficiency, brightness, and drive voltage). Some issues relating to the experimental procedures for the estimation of relevant material properties such as electron affinity and electron mobility are discussed. Electron Transport Materials for Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

Solar cells are one attractive method for harnessing inexhaustible clean energy from the sun. Organic photovoltaic technology is emerging as a potential competitor to silicon-based photovoltaic cells (PVCs), and their power conversion efficiencies (PCE) can now exceed 6%. Polymeric bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) PVCs, whose photoactive layer is composed of a blend of bicontinuous and interpenetrating donors and acceptors, can maximize interfacial area between the donor and the acceptor. Classic polymer donors, such as dialkoxy-substituted poly(para-phenylene vinylene)s (PPVs) and poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT), have been widely investigated. However, advances in synthetic methodology provide new avenues for the development of novel conjugated polymer donors with improved power conversion efficiencies. Development of novel conjugated donor polymers for high-efficiency bulk-heterojunction photovoltaic devices.

Low band gap polymers for organic photovoltaics

A series of novel soluble conjugated copolymers derived from 9,9-dioctylfluorene (DOF) and 4,7-di-2-thienyl-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (DBT) were synthesized by a palladium-catalyzed Suzuki coupling reaction with different feed ratios of DOF to DBT. Owing to exciton confinement on the DBT site, exciton emission is centred on the DBT chromophore and gives rise to saturated red emission. Polyfluorene fluorescence is quenched completely at DBT concentrations as low as 1% in the solid film. Devices based on these copolymers emit a saturated red light. Chromaticity coordinates are around x
= 0.70, y
= 0.30 for the copolymers. The emission peaks are shifted from 628 nm to 674 nm when DBT content increases from 1 to 35%. The highest quantum efficiency achieved with device configuration of ITO/PEDT/PFO-DBT/Ba/Al was 1.4% for the copolymer with 15% DBT content.
