PURPOSE:To automatically sort defective gears from normal ones by optically instantaneously detecting, without the use of any reference gear, the required accuracy of a toothed surface to control the quality of a gear to be measured. CONSTITUTION:A gear 18 to be measured is fitted by a manipulator 23 from a gear conveying line 22 to a measuring shaft 19 on which a rotary encoder is mounted. A laser beam is applied to the toothed surface of the gear 18 to be measured. The laser beam, reflected at the toothed surface of the gear 18 to be measured and collected, is converted by hologram optical elements 7a, 7b into a light wave plane which readily converges. The light converged through the hologram optical elements 7a, 7b is detected by arrays 11a, 11b of two-dimensional optical sensors as a two-dimensional optical intensity distribution. Data on the measurements of the toothed surface obtained by means of the arrays 11a, 11b of optical sensors is compared with a pattern stored in a database by the pattern analyzers 27a, 27b of a computer 27, to determine whether errors are permissible or should be discarded. By this method, the reflected beam is taken out from the imaginary plane I as emitted signal beam S' and projected on the photosensitive member held at a definite position to make it possible to form the hologram relating to the surface to be inspected.
