Membrane-based processes for wastewater nutrient recovery: Technology, challenges, and future direction

Nutrient recovery from digested biodegradable waste as marketable products has become an important task for anaerobic digestion plants to meet both regulatory drivers and market demands, while producing an internal revenue source. As such, the present waste problem could be turned into an economic opportunity. The aim of this study was to provide a comprehensive overview and critical comparison of the available/emerging technologies for nutrient recovery from digestate, and a classification of the resulting end-products according to their fertilizer characteristics. Based on the stage of implementation, the technical performance, as well as financial aspects, struvite precipitation/crystallization, ammonia stripping and (subsequent) absorption using an acidic air scrubber were selected as best available technologies to be applied at full-scale for nutrient recovery as marketable fertilizer commodities. The resulting end-products can and should be classified as renewable nitrogen–phosphorus (N/P) precipitates and nitrogen–sulfur (N/S) solutions, respectively, in fertilizer and environmental legislations. This would stimulate their use and foster nutrient recovery technology implementation.

Nutrient recovery from digestate : systematic technology review and product classification

Over the past years, numerous technologies have been developed to recover phosphorus (P) from waste streams to repair currently broken nutrient cycles. These developments were largely triggered by environmental considerations (sustainability, resource efficiency), concerns regarding the finite and geopolitically concentrated deposits of raw phosphate ore, and phosphate price increases. Municipal wastewater is a promising and viable source to recover P in larger quantities, to re-establish a circular economy and therefore increase net use efficiency. This work compiles the latest knowledge on approaches to recover P from municipal wastewater and related waste flows with a specific focus on the existing well-developed wastewater management infrastructure, available in significant parts of Europe (e.g., secondary treated effluent, digester supernatant, sewage sludge, sewage sludge ash). About 50 technologies were identified at various levels of development (industrial-, full-, pilot- and laboratory scale). The current selection of P recovery processes is broad and ranges from simple precipitation of dissolved P to complex multi-step approaches, and only a few of these displayed potential for full-scale implementation. They are discussed with regard to their technical principles, process parameters, recovery efficiency, resource demand, possible effects on wastewater treatment, waste flows, and fate of pollutants. We also evaluated them with respect to their rates of P removal from wastewater and their access points of P recovery. For selected technologies, material flow models are presented to facilitate the understanding of even complex processes. This work serves as a basis for future integrated comparative assessments of selected recovery approaches according to technical, environmental and economic criteria.

The objectives of this study were to know the effect of repeated freeze-thaw cycles of beef on the sensory, physicochemical quality and microbiological assessment. The effects of three successive freeze-thaw cycles on beef forelimb were investigated comparing with unfrozen fresh beef for 75 d by keeping at -20±1°C. The freeze-thaw cycles were subjected to three thawing methods and carried out to know the best one. As the number of freeze-thaw cycles increased color and odor declined significantly before cook within the cycles and tenderness, overall acceptability also declined among the cycles after cook by thawing methods. The thawing loss increased and dripping loss decreased significantly (p<0.05). Water holding capacity (WHC) increased (p<0.05) until two cycles and then decreased. Cooking loss increased in cycle 1 and 3, but decreased in cycle 2. pH decreased significantly (p<0.05) among the cycles. Moreover, drip loss, cooking loss and WHC were affected (p<0.05) by thawing methods within the cycles. 2-Thiobarbituric acid (TBARS) value increased (p<0.05) gradually within the cycles and among the cycles by thawing methods. Total viable bacteria, total coliform and total yeast-mould count decreased significantly (p<0.05) within and among the cycles in comparison to the initial count in repeated freeze-thaw cycles. As a result, repeated freeze-thaw cycles affected the sensory, physicochemical and microbiological qua- lity of beef, causing the deterioration of beef quality, but improved the microbiological quality. Although repeated freeze-thaw cycles did not affect much on beef quality and safety but it may be concluded that repeated freeze and thaw should be minimized in terms of beef color for commercial value and WHC and tenderness/juiciness for eating quality.

Effect of Repeated Freeze-Thaw Cycles on Beef Quality and Safety

This study was designed to reveal the role of posttransportation grazing on the physiological condition and meat quality traits of Black Bengal goats. Twenty-four castrated male Black Bengal goats were divided into a control (untransported) group and three treated groups: Walking and Transportation with Human Interference group (WTHI) (30 min walking before 6 hr transport and then 30 min walking with human interference), posttransportation grazing for 48 hr (PTG1), and posttransportation grazing for 72 hr (PTG2). The WTHI and PTG1 groups had a significant reduction in their blood concentrations of tri-iodothyronine (T3 ) and thyroxine (T4 ), and a significantly higher neutrophil and lymphocyte (N:L) ratio compared with those of the control group. Blood concentrations of T3 and T4 and the N:L ratio of PTG2 returned to the control level after 72 hr of grazing. The final pH and water-holding capacity values of meat were significantly higher in the WTHI group than in the control group, but those in the PTG2 group returned to the control level after 72 hr of grazing. These results demonstrate that posttransportation grazing for 72 hr is effective for recovering from damage induced by transportation stress.
